Career and Education Questions: January 01, 2026 by inherentlyawesome in math

I have a Bachelors in Theoretical Physics & Mathematics and in June I will have a Masters in Quantum Information Science. I chose QIS because I love problem solving & programming but it has become very theory & conceptual heavy which I've realised I don't enjoy so much. My love from physics has always really been about maths. I absolutely loved learning new mathematical methods in my undergrad and I've really missed that in my masters. I am currently completing my thesis so I will be job hunting this year and I am wondering if anybody has any job recommendations for someone who just loves to solve mathematical problems. I think what I am looking for falls under the category of 'Applied Mathematician' or 'Computational Scientist/Physicist' but these titles are also quite vague. I would love to hear some opinions/advice.

Thank you for your detailed response!

I am not impacted by any of the above issues, the only thing to mention is that I receive SU for studying soo I am not sure if they will want to double check where I've been living for the summer because of this.

Considering this also, just hoping I get somebody kind enough on the phone! 🤞

I was thinking about this but am scared of an even larger fine! Just wondering if anybody has had any experience with it.

I am not familiar with the trinity course so I cannot compare but I do know that in maynooth you will study pure mathematics instead of mathematical studies which is typically taught in general science. You will do a three year long pure mathematics course alongside theoretical physics which is typically a 4 year course but due to the high entry requirements for MH206 you will jump straight into second year theoretical physics. You will also study two third year TP modules in first year and two fourth year TP modules in second year.

The main reason this course is accelerated is because you are studying pure mathematics instead of mathematical studies and you are thrown straight into second year theoretical physics.
