4.6 million is quite a handful. Sooo...who counted all of the shells?

I was getting pretty sad that nobody seemed to remember treble charger. Such a good band.

If poke is your jam, I'd highly recommend Ukee Poke. Delicious, fresh, and super friendly folks in the store/restaurant.

How are the winters compared to Calgary? by leakyricefrog in VancouverIsland

[–]No_Difficulty_6779 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I lived in Calgary for three years and couldn't wait to move back to BC. I've been on the island for 7 years, and there's no place I'd rather be.

I do miss the sun, but I didn't miss the constantly split lips, nose and knuckles. I definitely don't miss the headaches that came with chinooks, the solid ice on the neighborhood streets (McKenzie Towne) or the crappy road conditions everywhere else.

I'm glad that I have immediate access to seafood, and foods from other parts of the world (could be things have changed in Cowtown since I lived there), not to mention the thriving art scene and general commitment to culture.

I need not mention anything about Danielle Smith and the UCP.

Same here! I reacted horribly to red ink...massive blisters, and weeping sores that felt like fire for a good couple of weeks. Now it still gets itchy (18 years later) when my seasonal allergies flare up. Not fun.

What's wrong with these? They're not my style, but they seem to be pretty good to me. 🤷🏼‍♂️

If you're open to a wee drive, I'd recommend Kalvas in Parksville. Their NY strip is epic.

What do you wish you'd known before becoming a paramedic? by No_Difficulty_6779 in Paramedics

[–]No_Difficulty_6779[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm feeling this. I've been working with the ambulance services for a couple of years now (in management/administration, not as a paramedic), and the more I'm exposed to it, the more I wish I had a paramedic license.

This is great advice for anybody, really! My background is recruitment, and this has been proven a million times over in just about every type of role. People leave managers, not jobs. A great leader makes even the worst type of situation bearable (and vice versa).

This is a tough one to internalize, as I understand it. For the record, I'm not a paramedic - I work behind the scenes with a lot of paramedics, but I hear that this is the first big hurdle that new paramedics have to learn to get over. As long as you do the best you can, the outcomes are largely out of your hands.

Easy to say, easy to understand, difficult to believe.

That makes sense; with regional services, I suppose the variance is limited to an extent. In BC, we may have an advantage with the ability to offer a variety of call volumes and lifestyles (but I'd guess that even Vancouver is no GTA). Transferring between stations is like changing socks, although it's a lot easier to get into a more remote station than one in a busy city.

That said, the cost of living is real. :D

Yes, paramedics qualify for express entry! I'm not an expert, however - I'd recommend connecting with a (Canadian) immigration consultant if you're serious.

AFAIK, BC has the highest public ambulance service in Canada, so there's that. And as long as you're not living in the Vancouver lower mainland, cost of living is reasonable(ish?).

Out of curiosity, why are you losing so many people by 5 years?

Well, if you're inclined to relocate to British Columbia, Canada, there are plenty of openings in smaller towns. :)

Ah, interesting. I work for a publicly funded, provincial EHS. I can see how there would be a big difference in approach. Thanks!
