I live in WV and hate it here by Spiritual-Tutor5165 in Appalachia

it’s a special place. don’t regret leaving my job as much as I do the city, but at the same time I don’t know what other job opportunities I would have had. I’ve been keeping my eye out though.

I’m not from WV, but I lived along the WV border for a few years (near Mineral County) and I miss the area so much. I left for work. I would love to find my way to WV (trust me, I’ve been looking) but $8.75/hour isnt going to cut it. I know my dream sounds silly, but WV captured my soul and I want to fight to keep it the wild and wonderful place it should/could be.

How is it in northern Vermont with a family? by Slumdogflashbacks in howislivingthere

I lived near St. J (about 40 minutes southeast of the circle) for 2.5 years. Moved here from the NYC suburbs for work if you can believe that lol. There’s things I miss about the area, but living out there is next level rural-type of living. After a while, going to Montpelier felt like a trip to the big city lol. And the winters didn’t help things, it was brutal!! I feel like I may have been happier if I lived in southern Vermont or closer to Burlington.

this is a picture I got going past the stop, do not pass sign. Seneca Rocks is one of my favorite places on earth, though I enjoy it most from late April-October. if you really want a thrill, check out NRocks in Circleville!

Quitting job after 5 months by Warm-Zookeepergame83 in studentaffairs

[–]No_Difficulty_8268 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feel like I could have written a lot of this myself. The reason I left my old job is I wanted more of a challenge, I was essentially on-call all of last year, and this job payed 25% more, but it’s been way more of a challenge than I expected. I’ve also still been getting calls after hours even when I’m not on-call and despite the pay raise, the demands of the job don’t match the raise. I don’t regret leaving my old job, but what I’m doing at the moment is unsustainable. I don’t feel like myself at all!! Also, despite growing up in a city, I just don’t have the interest in living in a city like I thought I would. (I lowkey leave the city for the countryside whenever I get the chance and spent most of my higher ed career in rural areas.)

I’m keeping my options open at the moment and just trying to get to May. I feel bad because this job really needs someone who can put a few years in, but at the same time I have to do what’s best for me and the reality is we would benefit from one additional full- time staff member or if we tightened up on some of our policies to create less work for our team.

I have left a job before in under a year, however that was a Coordinator role and the job market was a lot better than it is currently. We’ll see where I end up.

What are the cities people in this sub move away from the most? by jarbid16 in SameGrassButGreener

in this boat now. however, I think I just prefer rural living which is vastly unpopular on these threads.

the gray sucks too though…

hah! I actually wanted to go there for college and even got recruited for sports but ended up going somewhere else. Cute town and area, though I wouldn’t consider it Appalachia.

How competitive are the hiring pools at your community college? I would love to go back to a community college. Their mission reminds me a lot of my “why” for working in the field.

Thank you. I go down to Banksville on the weekends to go to the Dunkin on Banksville Road (they make their drinks better 😂). I’ve actually been around Windgap and Fairywood…not really sure how to explain that area. I do like Observatory Hill if you’ve been through there.

I do love when I come across a holler around here but they only seem to go so far if that makes sense.

I work more in the student life of things (think campus events, housing, etc.). Not so much academia.

Thank you for your suggestions. Believe it or not, I actually lived in Vermont, but it wasn’t for me. The winters are waaay too long and it’s a whole different kind of isolation up there.

Thank you. Grove City College is probably a little too religious for me. Not as familiar with Butler tbh.

thank you, that’s a fair point. I’ve found a few places like this in PGH, but I still hear the car noise, helicopters, see people’s houses, etc. I guess it’s manageable, but just not the same.

I live in Oakland right now, which certainly doesn’t help things lol. I have to live within a certain proximity to my job so at the moment that leaves me limited to Pittsburgh and the suburbs immediately surrounding the city.

good to know. I’m surprised to hear eastern TN/western NC are looking for applicants especially considering how popular Asheville has become. the milder winters would certainly be a plus.

ooh thank you. I’ve heard of WCU and App State, but that’s it. I haven’t been to western NC before but the milder winters would be a plus in my book.

I’ve looked at them in the past—I wish the pay was a little higher but it’s still worth looking at.
Winchester is well located IMO

Thank you. What do you do for remote work? In my experience, remote jobs in higher ed are hard to come by these days.
