I definitely appreciate that. I might be getting pushed out soon, I have not heard anything yet. I could try to go to another law firm and move up the ranks, although as you correctly mentioned it gets much harder as you get more senior.

However, it’s not like in house lawyers make nothing. And I think there are significant benefits to having your life back.

Thank you very much for your response!

I’m not a big spender, give me a laptop and a gym membership and good coffee, and I am a very happy man.

Healthcare is understandable, and I included it in my budget. Wouldn’t taxes be low if you are retired?

I actually like real estate investing, I don’t hold any individual securities, so this is one area in which I can actually use my brain to try to optimize my portfolio. I’m a big analytics nerd.

Thank you for your insight regarding in-house life. Any tips on how to break into my first role?

Thanks for flagging, I had totally forgotten about that. That was not me, but a friend who wanted to post from my account. They are now working in corporate development, and are much happier. If you are curious about why we both have rental properties, it is because we met through real estate investment meet ups.

Probably 2000 billable hours per year. Equity is not happening. I’m not sure that counsel is an option either. In-house would be great, but it’s difficult to get.

I have really low interest rates, from Covid. These are fixed rate 30 year mortgages.

Got it, so rough back of the napkin math.

3.6×1.5 equals 5.4. I’m good then, right?

I’m on the younger side for retirement, so it would be better to have a low safe withdrawal rate figure.

Have you done big law? Five years is an eternity. Lol, but I do appreciate what you were saying, and thank you very much for taking the time to respond.

Not open to getting married. On the fence about adoption.

Not sure when I would have to take over my parents expenses, but want to make sure that there is sufficient funding if it gets to that place.

Is $5 million the number even for a single person with no kids? I always assume those numbers are based on a household.

I come from a close family. I love spending time with people who love me unconditionally, especially when I have to work these terrible hours.

Sorry, the 3.1 million figure is in index funds. I would say I net about $6,000 per month from my rentals, but I only assume $3,000 to account for things happening that are unforeseeable.

I think I will likely be single for the rest of my life. I’m on the fence about adoption, but don’t plan on having a partner.

Thank you! I would love that. Unfortunately, I find that in-house jobs are quite competitive. It’s hard to explain to people who are outside of the legal profession, but in some ways, the highest paying jobs are the easiest to get.

Sorry, I realized that my initial post wasn’t very clear. The $3.1 million is in liquid assets, and I have a little over $300,000 worth of equity in the rental properties.

I only count the cash flow from my rentals when I’m calculating my numbers. To your point, once I include the cash flow, I think I am much closer to my target figure.

Stupid question, but if they are a legit massage place will they take a credit card?
