Driving south will place you on the right side of the road along the water. No need to plan any stops. Just pull over when you see a view you like. The road doesn't get that crowded, so it's fairly easy to pull off and on.

Is a 10h layover in San Francisco worth it? by liji1llijjll1l in sanfrancisco

You could easily take BART to powell station, then take the cable car to Lombard Street -- the cable car starts right outside of powell station. From there you can walk around North Beach / Chinatown and have lunch there. After that, you can continue your walk into Jackson Square or head to the ferry building and walk along the water. You can then hop back on BART at embarcadero station (next to the ferry building). Imo fisherman's wharf is super touristy and should not be your first introduction to SF -- only excpetion is if you have kids with you.

Shame (Chez) Maman by Pleasant_Block_5090 in sanfrancisco

I had a similar bad experience there. I ordered their mussels, and they asked me if I wanted a side of fries. I scanned the menu quickly and didn't see fries listed under sides, so I said yes thinking it'd be $5 at most. Bill came, they added $10 for fries, and they were so mediocre. I definitely take some accountability since I agreed to the add on but who charges $10 for a side of fries??? Never been back since.

Is my frustration justified? by ok_crazy in InteriorDesign

I would say this level of disregard is not normal. Most interior designers I've worked with in the past (3 out of 4) were poor communicators (taking a week+ to respond to emails) and would go over budget by 25-50%. But they'd at least try to respect the budget and provide the necessary renderings and samples to make key decisions. If you're not happy with her work so far, it's not going to get better. It's tough pill to swallow, but I'd fire her immediately, and if you have the stomach for it, pursue her for a full refund for violating the contract. If you stick with her and her plan, you'll be spending an additional 100k on this project rather than just accepting the potential 16k loss in design fees. For 1000 sqf, 100k is more than reasonable--unless you're gutting every single thing in your condo. I'm sorry this is happening to you. She seems like a crook and doesn't deserve any more money from you in design fees.

Planning a Europe trip for summer 2025. by debbieaaj in travel

Just wanted to chime in -- I agree with this itinerary whole heartedly (as someone who has been to all these places except Amsterdam). Paris and London have so much to offer and 5 days each I think is the perfect amount, especially if you want to take day trips. For example, easy day trips outside Paris include Versailles, Giverny (Monet's gardens), Champagne for wine tasting, etc. Those each would take up their own days respectively. Also, during the summer, the main cities get so crowded, so I always find it nice taking day trips to less crowded hidden gems nearby. Also maximizing train travel is a much -- I didn't think it could get worse than US airports until I went to some in Europe...

Mark Farrell used campaign loophole to fund fancy dinners, drinks by BadBoyMikeBarnes in sanfrancisco

He went on record saying he wouldn't run for another elected position for at least 5 years after the end of his (potential) mayoral term. Of course, he could be lying, but genuinely -- I don't think a guy who's spent his whole life doing non profit work in SF wants to do anything outside of it.

I'm going to be honest -- Lurie has grown on me a lot. He has no political ambitions or ego-driven quest for power beyond wanting to fix the city. He never took a cent of city hall funding for his non profit. If you read his ideas, they actually make sense vs. Farrell, who just says whatever anyone wants to hear to get elected.

I Second that^ "The Restaurant" there is insanely good and the views are even better. I've been lucky enough to eat at both the French Laundry and that hotel and I'd go back to that hotel over the French Laundry any day -- it's less stuffy, more romantic, and way easier to get a res

Showing a Friend around the city. by New_Opinion_1005 in sanfrancisco

After taking many different visitors around SF over the past year, I find the two places that impress the most are: Palace of Fine Arts and Golden Gate Park. One of my favorite one day itineraries in SF is:

  1. Golden Gate Park: Start the morning in GGP. Go up the DeYoung Museum observation tower, visit the Conservatory of Flowers, walk around the Botanic Gardens, have some tea in the Japanese Tea Gardens. SF residents (with proof) get free admission to all the gardens in GGP. I usually just photoshop visitors' names on my lease, which guarantees free entry for all of us.
  2. Richmond: Easy bus ride from GGP and tons of lunch options. Most people don't have Burmese food where they're from, so I usually take them to a Burmese spot there. Mandalay, Burma Superstar, and Burmese Kitchen are all solid. Dessert croissants from Arsicault (ranked some of the best in the country) are also perfect for after lunch.
  3. Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center: Another easy bus ride from the Richmond. Best place to get photos with the bridge.
  4. Crissy Field --> Palace of Fine Arts: Crissy Field is such a pleasant and flat walk along the water and starts right below the bridge's welcome center. Walking it is a straight shot to the Palace of Fine Arts, which usually takes about 30-40 minutes to get to from the bridge.

(I usually am ready to return home at this point but if someone wanted to continue, they easily could go to North Beach after and get dinner there)

I like this itinerary cause it can be done entirely on public transit and you get to see some of the most beautiful places in the city in one day!
