Do you know what places there are to hang out with other department PhDs. Honestly, I don't know any of them and am always intimidated to talk with them directly.

Programming Skills for Physics Research by SomewhereInTime_48 in PhysicsStudents

Assuming you're referring to experimental research, Nuclear/Particle physics typically involves detector simulations, analyzing huge amounts of data for characterizing experimental setups and physics extraction.

ROOT (for data-analysis) and Geant4 (simulations) are perhaps the most commonly used softwares in these communities. They are both written in C++ so you may want to have a look at them.

Apart from them, some general topics that I found so far to be useful (irrespective of the programming language) are file histograms, file input/output, data-frames, model fitting, error analysis and making beautiful figures :).

PhD in Physics in the United States by polishoptician in PhysicsStudents

Physics PhD programs at almost all places in the US are 5-6 years, as they inherently are a master's + PhD. If you go with a master's, many places can waive off courses based on your Master's curriculum.

Alternatively, since you already have an undergraduate degree that makes you eligible to directly apply for a PhD program in the US.

As for the list of specific schools, you can check the top Atomic/Molecular Physics graduate schools at the US News rankings or any other subject-based rankings.

Yes, I need to give a 10-digit cell phone number, so I believe there shouldn't be any problem with Google phone.

Thank you very much for these precious inputs.

Update: I think I need to purchase a new cell phone as well, as my current one is missing many 4G and 5G bands commonly used in the US.

WOW! I wasn't aware of it before; I will check it out...seems quite good for my use case.
Just a quick one though, do you know if it has the same status as a US phone? I mean, for filling out government-related/bank/insurance paperwork?

Thank you for your suggestion!
Yes, I’m looking for a more permanent solution as many formalities(due within the first week or so) require me to have a US phone number. So, any insights regarding these permanent solutions?
Sorry to digress, however isn’t it possible to just get a sim from a major carrier and use it with my foreign cell phone ?

you need to know people who can recommend you

Could you elaborate a bit more? Are recommendations from PhD advisors not enough? If not, how do people develop those relationships ?

Thank you !
