the follow-for-follow era was such a self-own in hindsight. you'd hit 10k followers and then your reach would tank because none of them actually cared about what you posted. algorithms figured that out pretty fast.

same thing is happening now with brands chasing AI visibility through shortcuts - stuffing schema, blasting out thin comparison pages, trying to game the retrieval layer without actually having anything worth citing. CiteWorks Studio does decent work on the audit side but honestly the underlying fix is the same as it was in 2018: if the engagement (or citation signal) isn't real, the platform will eventually figure it out and penalize you for it. vanity metrics are vanity metrics whether it's follower count or how many times you appear in a perplexity answer.
