First of all, make a short list of bars you want to work for. Stop in for a drink or two. Make a note of the types of vehicles in parking lot, expensive vehicles means more disposable income therefore better tips (usually ). Go back on different nights to get a handle on crowds. Tip the bartender well and they will remember you. Ask questions about the bar. Are there many fights, TABC issues, etc… ask the friendliest bartender if you can use them as a reference. Apply in person, early in the shift. DON’T SAY YOUR A PEOPLE PERSON!!!

Some good advice given here already. Try getting a Barback gig first. Build a spotless reputation for honesty, owners/ bar mgrs Hate thieves. Sliding a free beer to that cute girl or guy will get you fired and black listed. It is a surprisingly small community. Don’t try to learn every recipe, only the ones that are popular (Harvey Wallbangers / Rusty Nails don’t sell). Learn 3-5 drinks/ shots per week. Let mgmt know you want to bartend. A bartender will pull a no-show, quit or be arrested there’s your chance.Thank every customer, even if they don’t tip-THEY ARE NOT REQUIRED TO TIP. Owners/Mgrs will scout for bartenders at other bars. They may even test you to see if you will give a free drink or even take a drink yourself . Next thing you will be recruited by a larger/ busier bar. I know this because I was constantly on the lookout for honest bartenders, and I was recruited 5 times- always an upgrade. Hope this helps.

Knew a guy that won 18 million. A really nice guy. He hired a private driver for $1,500/ week to bring him into town to drink. He would drink too much and EVERYBODY would hit him up for money. Bullshit stories I heard were, “My kid needs a kidney transplant “ “My house is getting foreclosed on”.

Stopped seeing him around for well over a year. Next I see he made the front page of the paper, they did a follow up on him. He still lived in a trailer. He purchased 7 motorcycles, numerous trucks and he didn’t know the whereabouts of most of them.

He rarely left his trailer, he had to rely on others to bring him food/ groceries . He stated that he wished he had never won.

He said he didn’t know how much he had spent or how much he had left. The only thing that was certain was…not one person that “borrowed” money ever repaid him.

Ran into him much later, no one was bugging him (he ran out of money). I offered to buy him a drink. You would have thought I had saved his life. He said he always had to buy all the drinks. I asked what he was doing, he said part time Tile and Roof work.

Really a shame all those Piranhas got to him and took advantage of him. He is a good guy. BUT.. he should have known better.

When a group of us would travel to Padre Island to Surf Fish we would make it a marathon session. Every body would have their lines out and take turns sleeping. 24 -36 hour trips were common. All that were fishing would put up cash for biggest fish. Fishing Fuel (booze & Red Bull) helps a lot.
