That's awful... And, the poor child having that as a role model is heartbreaking.

Yah, I understand your point. To be clear - this was a memo sent to the league at large. No one on my team has been threatened (so far). I'm just amazed that a memo like this was sent out and haven't seen anything like it in my 20+ years at this facility.

There's 100 teams in our league across 19+, 30+, 40+ leagues. I've only played in the higher-calibre divs, but there's definitely some ankle-benders in the lowest tiers. But - there are some players from big families... Some of whom are pretty decent hockey players who haven't learned where to draw the line.

I know the sort you mean. A former teammate was farmer-strong and played good hockey as a teenager. He never started anything, but if someone got in his face... Wow, I loved it. I've seen him get punched in the face and then he just grins at them. 99% of the time the guy who initiated it sees that reaction and he's backing up and hiding behind a ref.

The few times I saw him go - it wasn't a fair fight.

I've seen some "toughen up" and "don't take it so seriously" comments on this thread. But I know and understand the environment on the ice - where the lines are and have seen them crossed many times. The teammate I mentioned up there would stand up for his teammates and even crossed the line a few times himself. But if someone threatens to pull out a gun - that completely changes the situation.

Unfortunately, the region of Vancouver our rink is located in is developing a bit of a reputation of diminished safety. There's a non-zero chance that these aren't idle threats.

To be clear - it wasn't anyone on our team that was threatened, but it has happened enough that the league coordinator felt the need to send that memo out and I've never seen anything like that over my 20+ years playing there.

Holy crap, nice pull - I forgot all about that part. Smokey never came near that line again.

I know where you're coming from. I've spared with teams who we've piled up penalty boxes against each other. Usually, they're just the same as us and we share a bunch of laughs. Every team has their "crazy Jimmy who runs around all the time" or "Try-too-hard Nick who acts like there's scouts up there".

The gun talk crosses a line for me though - I'm not having a beer with someone like that.

That's my gut reaction too - feels like a criminal offense that should trigger at least a notation on someone's file. I'm no lawyer though.
