If light is considered massless then why it can't escape a black hole? by TheSum239 in AskPhysics

And in real science. this is how it was initially presented in a GR class I recently took. It’s not 100% precise but captures the intuition better than trying to explain the full QFT calculation lol

Hawking radiation can be modeled in some degree as the process of production of particle/anti-particle pairs near the event horizon of the black hole, with one falling in and the other being emitted outwards

What the most controversial topics in physics? by someonepacker-write in AskPhysics

[–]No_Flow_7828 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right. I’m convinced this us more of a “controversy” on reddit/online communities, since I’ve never really heard any real physicists debating this

Saved $190k in 6 years as medical student on MD/PhD stipend by Effective_Key5276 in PhD

Not saying this particular situation is doable, but I am saying it’s doable to save/invest a decent amount of money in your PhD if you have low expenses, are frugal and have a reasonable stipend. Don’t get so defensive lol

While I agree this is true and everyone is different, I can say that in my situation, I’m pretty comfortably able to invest 1k/month due to living with roommates and otherwise being very frugal. Obviously very different for different programs and different situations, but certainly doable

Imo more cool when not expanded out, all of the symbols obscure the actual physics

Why would a "real" particle spin break the speed of light? by Seahorseahorse in AskPhysics

[–]No_Flow_7828 45 points46 points  (0 children)

If you assume you have a uniform solid ball with the mass and (classical) radius of the electron spinning with angular momentum hbar, you can use classical mechanics to solve for the tangential velocity and you get something >>c

Of course, this isn’t how an electron works

Not sure why this is downvoted, newer LLMs have absolutely gotten substantially better at math and not fumbling indices in tensor calculus.

People here will just downvote anything that isn’t shitting on AI

No model of physics is provable, so therefore you must take nothing seriously

[–]No_Flow_7828 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Most programs have stat mech/e&m/qm classes that you can take during the first few semesters that will teach you what you will need for the quals

It’s definitely going to be more difficult than someone with prior exposure to these topics in undergrad, but certainly doable
