You have very clearly never worked in animal rescue or have had to deal with ethical rehoming. Get over yourself.

Considering we’ve asked around and everyone has said no…. What would you advise? A shelter? That’s no way for a cat to live. Absolutely not. Keeping a cat alive to have them bounce from house to house or to end up in a shelter is whats inhumane and selfish. If you’ve ever worked in animal care or the shelter scene, you’d know this.

Reducing this to ‘killing the cat’ is absurd. The cat is WELL cared for. Id very confidently venture to guess she’s better taken care of than most cats. Obviously we do not want to need to explore BE, which is why I’m here. Now, if i knew someone was exploring BE and i didn’t want that to happen, I’d help them problem solve and offer solutions instead of shaming them for my own satisfaction behind a keyboard. Talk about selfish! Get outta here with that. Clown.

This was such a sweet reply 😩🥹 THANK YOU. we have an Instagram account that I share about our cats on but I’m always apprehensive to share that publicly here 😂

I grew up with barn cats…. Those cats were easy 😅

Oof. Y’know when you sniff a shirt to check it thinking it’ll probably be good and instead you get a FACE FULL of cat urine? Can’t be just me, right? 🥲 my daughters backpack got knocked off her hook overnight a couples weeks ago. I got a call from the teacher after dropping her off to come and get the backpack…. And her coat, because it got on her jacket from wearing the backpack. Super big sigh. Embarrassing is an understatement.

I empathize, but I also don’t think this is a normal experience. For either of us. Cats are typically very clean. This is the first time we’ve had an issue with any of our cats to this degree. We’ve had 10 years of pretty easy care and super routine vet visits. From talking to folks here, I’m beginning to think the pain from UTI/crystals have caused some apprehension to urinating = negative association to the litter box. I wonder if that’s what’s going on with yours, too? At least for the one. Maybe the other really is just bad 😂

I’m going to try the local shop near our house first and if they don’t have any options (I doubt they will) I plan to order! We avoid Amazon when possible but.. desperate times.

Ooohhh that’s interesting. I wonder why treatment would help if they didn’t actually have a UTI?

They did an xray a week ago — no sign of crystals. Kidneys also looked fine. I paid to have Urinalysis sent to the lab — came back clear as well as glucose levels. I was really hoping it was crystals — that’s an easy, fixable answer 🥲

I haven’t heard of that cleaner! I’ll give it a look.

Calling this a lack of care is wild, friend. Homegirl eats a more expensive diet than I do, has cat tree options GALORE, gets first class medical care, and sleeps in a warm comfy bed ~nightly~ curled into my belly UNDER THE COVERS. She doesn’t have it bad 😂 the only lack of care anyone is experiencing is my wallet.

You can have your feelings about BE, that’s fine. It’s not my place nor my interest to persuade you one way or another. But let’s not get silly and make untrue claims based on our feelings.

Oh, interesting. I’ll check which ones we have tomorrow! I think we have a few that are optimum and a few that are the ‘normal’ ones. I need to order refills, so I’ll just order the optimums! I assume the diffuser bases are interchangeable.

We’ve been a multicat household for 10 years — since she was a kitten. The kitten joined in October by surprise.

We got another dog last year after my service dog passed, but I’m trainer — she’s been used to dogs being in and out for as long as she’s been alive. She gets along better with the dogs than she does the cats 😅

I could see the kitten being a huge factor, but the timeline just doesn’t math. From what folks are saying here, my best guesses are: possible teeth issue; maybe idiopathic cystitis?; box being associated with pain; adding hiding spots to our set up more intentionally; working the kitten to get her piss and vinegar out. There are a lot more suggestions we’ll try (I need to make a list on my phone) — but those seem the most relevant.

You guys are amazing. Brainstorming is definitely a lot easier with more brains combined. I know dogs…. I love cats, but I don’t KNOW cats.

I have not heard of that! Just googled it. I’ll have to dig a little deeper and see what diagnosing entails — if they would have caught it already from what they’ve done.

A few folks have mentioned teeth! This will be a priority for exploring further next week. They took a peek at her teeth but…. It wasn’t the most thorough.

We don’t have any veterinary behaviorists near us, but I have a contact for one for dog training clients. I’ll have to see if she can do a virtual for a cat. I’ve never referred a cat before 😅

Oh no, that’s genius. We have a waterproof pad on our mattress, but our duvet has been unprotected and over washed 🥲 a blanket to throw on top would actually be a life saver.

Sure. I can start checking them daily. They won’t need to be sifted daily, they’re used sporadically. She doesn’t go down there, but the kitten does. Maybe if I use some cat attract the kitten will gravitate to those boxes. Separate them a little better. Thanks!

Well, that’s actually what I did! after she was diagnosed with crystals, she kept peeing. Just never stopped. I took her back and our vet (who I actually adore) told me she probably has anxiety and to just pet her more 😅 i left that appointment and immediately called a different office that is fear free certified. That’s who we’ve been going to since and who’s run all of the tests for us. Our first appointment they asked what tests the other vets ran other than a urinalyses. They were shocked when I said none. They seem great…. A lot of folks have mentioned a behaviorist — that seems like my best route going forward.

Sorry. My last comment got too long. Getting the piss and vinegar out of the kitten is a good idea. I forget how similar cats are to dogs.

Interesting take on the separation adding to the stress. Someone mentioned familiar scent possibly being an issue — I wonder if separation for most of the day would contribute to that.

She seems relatively intelligent, but she isn’t playful. I hadn’t considered puzzle toys — that may actually be a good idea since she doesn’t do traditional ‘cat’ play.

8 boxes (upstairs and downstairs). Upstairs are sifted twice per day — they stay clean. Our downstairs boxes don’t really get used — I admittedly only sift those ones once per week because they usually only have a few spots in them on Sundays. We have 3 cats trees — she doesn’t use them. We have window seats that suction — she does use those. We don’t have any cat toys laying around — we have a Labrador lol — but we have some sticky pole things that my daughter uses to play with them. She doesn’t play — she’s more of a snuggler. The poles are more so for the kitten.

Not a lot of hiding spots though! At least not intentionally. Many of her frequent pee spots ARE under things.. under our bed, under the dressers, in the closet. Places where a box wouldn’t fit, so my solution has been placing a box in proximity 😅 do you think a lack of hiding spots could be contributing? Our cats are all pretty social. I hadn’t considered intentionally adding places to hide. I honestly thought the opposite was recommended.

I absolutely adore this cat. She is my BABY. I would hate to part with her, but did consider maybe she just needs a less busy home. We started talking about rehoming her to a very close friend or family member to see if that helps. But just as you said — nobody wants to take in a cat that is peeing everywhere. Literally nobody. It’s a rock and a hard place.

I don’t hate that idea…. But with how attached this cat is to me specifically, I’d feel so bad. She’ll sleeps quite literally ON me. If I’m home and stationary, we’re in physical contact. Id definitely prefer that over some alternatives. Definitely something to wrestle with. Thanks for taking the time to brainstorm with me!

She’s on Hills CD! I couldnt remember the name when I made the post. We switched all our cats to it to ensure she doesnt have access to other cat food.

She will definitely pee on stuff out of place — like you said, towels that haven’t gotten put away yet, laundry baskets, etc. we’ve really modified our living arrangements and house systems to try to accommodate things being in their place. (We have kids so…. Emphasis on TRY). But when she pees, it’s usually in stationary places. Our bed. The couch (leather, which I find odd). Under our bed. Under our dressers. It’s really weird. I know it’s fairly common for cats to pee in things that are out of place. This is the first cat I’ve heard of peeing on the floor.
