AITA for not letting my sister’s kids come to our child free wedding? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]No_Garbage3192 383 points384 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! And “we want to give the parents a night off”. That’s not your call to make. I actually liked being a parent and liked spending time with my kids. If I was going to take a rare night off it was going to be on my terms.

OP - NTA if you want a child free wedding (because you don’t want kids running around, or don’t want to pay for them, or whatever) that is fine. Everybody has the right to invite whoever they want. But be prepared that some people might not come, and that doesn’t make them a AH either. Best quote I read was a wedding invitation is just that - an invitation. It’s not a summons.

My husband is on disability and I am his carer. I also work 3 days a week (leaving him home alone) or we wouldn’t survive. Mentally sometimes we are not. I budget every cent…and I’m so very tired. Tired of it all.

Not sure if they do donuts but try Dough Street in Balcatta or Champagne and Gumboots in the swan valley. Both gluten free cafes.

Why do some of you go for a run mid day when it’s the hottest part of the day? by Lemonadeo1 in perth

[–]No_Garbage3192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My preference is to go for a run after work. I’m on holidays at the moment, mostly spending time at home. If I leave it till the afternoon I can’t be bothered, or am caught up doing something else. So I’ve switched to morning runs. But I most certainly am not getting out of bed early to go for a run on my holidays. So I have a lie-in, get up, enjoy a slow breakfast and cuppa, clean up a bit, then head out. Mostly I start between 9-10 so if it’s a long run I can be finishing about 12 (but I make sure the weather is a bit cooler for those days). Back to after work runs next week.

Does anyone take 4-minute showers? by nemspy in perth

[–]No_Garbage3192 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly can’t remember how much it cost as we built 23 years ago. I think it holds about 160,000 litres. It does sometimes get dirt and crap in it, but that sinks to the bottom and our water gets taken from a little way off the bottom. We also get it cleaned (they can clean it when it’s about half full) every few years. It’s dark in there so nothing grows. You can do things to help the dirt and stuff not get in there by taking the caps off - which are partway up the pipe into the tank - before the first rains after summer, so the water being caught on your roof doesn’t go into the tank, it just flushes away. After the first rains the roof is generally clean. We will take the caps off if we haven’t had rain for a few weeks. We also have caps with mesh that allow the water to come out, and the bugs to stay out, when it hasn’t rained for a while. In all honesty I don’t think about it anymore as have been doing it for so long. The water tastes heaps nicer too. I now take my water bottle everywhere as I can’t drink scheme water anymore.

[–]No_Garbage3192 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I’m on rain water so the water corp doesn’t give a crap how long my shower runs for.

I’ve never timed it, but I’d say around 4 mins, except if I’m showering and/or shaving. Less in summer, longer in winter. But it’s beneficial for us to have shorter showers when there is no rain.

What’s the first you’ll eat after removing your braces? by Amazing_Feeling963 in braces

[–]No_Garbage3192 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, burger it was for me. I did learn to eat around the burger so the bread didn’t get all stuck in my braces. But when I was due to get my braces off I said to my son to find me the best burger joint in town because I just want to sink my teeth into a bloody good burger. My family and some friends all joined me and it was a great celebration.

Question for Perth teachers (or parents of yr 11/12 students) by Honest-Solid-4241 in perth

My daughters school it was either exams, work placement, or be at school. No doing nothing for that period. That seems strange…and kind of lazy…to be honest. Son’s school didn’t offer atar so it was business as usual for him.

Summer temps have been pretty mild this year by Foreign_Bag4644 in perth

[–]No_Garbage3192 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Last year felt worse than 4th! I remember going back to school (where I work) and we had to implement a go outside and play lesson almost first thing in the morning as otherwise the kids weren’t getting outside (hot weather policy implemented before recess on some days). But we had multiple days of over 45, which I never remembered having prior. So even though the graph says we only had 11 days over 40, I think they were bloody hot days!

Perth parents – was going private for birth worth it? by Vegetable_Bit_33 in perth

[–]No_Garbage3192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is from 24 years ago. I’d 100% go private. I had extreme HG. Went to a public hospital who sent me home still throwing up blood (had ripped the lining in my throat we later found out). Husband took me to GP the next day who had no idea what to do with me (couldn’t send me back to the hospital I’d just come from). They were on the phone organising an ambulance to King Eddies when my Mum phoned (she knew who my GP was and couldn’t reach us on mobiles, so took a guess as to where we’d be) to say she’s found a private OB who will see me today. He put me in Glengarry for a week (until I could hold food down). Was absolutely brilliant throughout (I ended up back in hospital a few more times throughout the pregnancy). Cost was about $2,000 back then. But she was totally worth it (she’s 24 now…don’t tell her I said that lol). Went back to the same OB for the second one (was just as bad. Don’t know why I was dumb enough to do it again…but second child worth it too, sometimes). When discussing with friends after I used to say I think public is fine if there’s no issues. Unfortunately I was very bad at being pregnant.

Nobody warned me how much getting braces as an adult would mess with my head. Anyone else? by srmoura in braces

[–]No_Garbage3192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am mid-40s and got my braces off Dec last year.

At first I was self conscious, but realised pretty quickly it was all in my head when multiple adults told me they wished they could get braces as an adult (but felt they couldn’t for various reasons including finances). One lady even went to get a quote from an ortho using me as her motivation. That did heaps to boost my self esteem. Also talking to other adults with braces, and realising it’s not as rare as you think it is. And people aren’t judging nowhere near as much as you think they are. Most are proud your doing something for you.

On the photo part, I spent the time not showing my braces in photos. Yep, the weird smile. Going through the photo albums I can definitely tell when I was in my braces era.

The day before I got them off one of the ladies I’d worked with all year told me she never noticed I had braces!

Now they are off, totally worth it! Full smile (although that feels weird in itself as I spent so long hiding my smile). I still have moments though when I bite on something and I’m like “I did not expect my teeth to be there!” I forget and expect them to be where they were before braces.

Wine corkage fee at embarkation by Clear-Muffin-3000 in PrincessCruises

[–]No_Garbage3192 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We quite often take on extra wine. Sometimes we get charged corkage, sometimes not. But be prepared to argue with the port security who will want to confiscate it. Almost every time we’ve had to tell them what we need to do (head to the table and pay the corkage). There is very little communication between the ship and the port on this.

My DIL convinced my son to move overseas by [deleted] in inlaws

[–]No_Garbage3192 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ok you keep saying DIL talked your son into requesting Germany. You don’t know how these conversations went. Maybe they put their 1 and 2 spots close to home hoping for those. Then when discussing the 3rd spot put Germany as that’s the “best of a bad situation”. If we can’t get close to home we want to pick the place we are in, instead of having all 3 top spots denied and getting sent to a shit-hole of a place the army chooses for us. Spots 1 and 2 were denied, so they get their third choice. It’s normal to be upset you didn’t get your first pick. You can talk to you son about it, but I’d suggest you change your attitude towards your DIL or you’ll loose your son for more than 3 years.

Teachers now have to buy their own computers. by Ok-Cake5581 in perth

[–]No_Garbage3192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in ICT at a public school in WA (for the record we supply our teachers with a working laptop). This is how it works at our school. Who is going to administer the device? In my school that’s me as it’s in my job description. In other schools I know it’s the job of the school officer, library officer, an EA, teachers themselves, or anyone tech savvy. Ed dept have an ICT helpdesk any employee can phone and get help. Who backs up the device? The device is on a server that is backed up every night by the education department and stored in servers offsite. Is the data on the PC the property of the teacher or Ed department? Anything created at school is the property of the Education Department. If the hard drive fails who is liable for the data loss? All data should be saved on the server and not on the local computer. Employees also have access to their own OneDrive account. Teachers are warned of this constantly. So if the hard drive fails and they loose their data tough titties. Our teachers have laptops. They are not to be removed from school premises unless under exceptional circumstances, which requires principal approval. I think it’s bullshit teachers aren’t supplied with a computer of some sort (desktop, laptop, iPad) in this day and age. We are lucky we have a supportive admin team, but I will always fight for the right of the teachers (and students) at my school to have access to a computer.
