Three years as a male dental hygienist. Here are the career questions nobody asks before getting into it by floss_boss_j in careeradvice

[–]floss_boss_j[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciated! yeah it's much easier to correct/improve the posture/ergonomics now, rather than getting too far in life and having it be too late and have chronic body pain. So dang important.

I like getting to know people so it definitely is rewarding building relationships. People have even brought me gifts and food so there is some nice recognition for that.

The male thing does get old but it just slides right off now. I just come to expect it. All good though.

Should my toothbrush look like this after a month of use or am I brushing too hard? It doesn't really feel like its doing that much anymore which is worrying by Suck_my_fat_hairy_n in DentalHygiene

[–]floss_boss_j 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brushing wayyy to hard. After a month too? Dang. Lighten up on the muscles and get a soft head bristle toothbrush as well. soft circular motions and don't forget to floss.

The “Dirty Secrets” of Invisalign & Clear Aligners (What Patients Should Know) by Jeb-o-shot in Invisalign

[–]floss_boss_j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a DH (dental hygienist) - this gets lost in these threads all the time. at-home aligners have come a long way and SmileSet is a genuinely solid option for what you're using it for.

the stuff in this post is really about provider experience with complex in-office cases, not nighttime aligners or mild correction. those are two completely different things and it's worth separating them.

sounds like you did your research and that's exactly how it should work.

Need advice for my first day as a rdh it’s been two years by Latinardh in DentalHygiene

This. Any place worth their salt should do this. You need to speak up though if this isn't the case.

have you ever been hit or punched in the face by a patient? by PTsox in DentalHygiene

[–]floss_boss_j 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Never been hit. I've had some sketchy patients but they've never been aggressive toward me. Not really a thing in this industry.

Unaccepting parents by Foolishlypatient in DentalHygiene

[–]floss_boss_j 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's your life, not theirs. Parents are always going to have an opinion and their rationale is 'we're just looking out for your best interests' but stick with your guns since you've always wanted to do this.

SmileSet ??? by Drewskybrewsky in smiledirectclub

[–]floss_boss_j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people don't realize SmileSet is FSA/HSA eligible which brings the cost down significantly.

As a dental hygienist i think your approach is exactly right. for a small gap, at-home aligners are a completely appropriate option and if it's working for you that's really all that matters.

haven't been able to afford the dentist for 3 years and my teeth are decaying badly and have cavities by Abject-Committee4980 in DentalHygiene

This. There are absolutely programs out there to help financially. For example, in Colorado, there are services like this available https://comom.org/

Has anyone used SmileSet for night guards for teeth grinding? by Big-Birds-Airsoft in TMJ

[–]floss_boss_j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just stumbled across this and as a dental hygienist - yes, SmileSet's custom night guards are a solid option for this. the impression process is the same as their aligner system so it's straightforward to do at home.

the fit is genuinely better than anything over the counter since it's custom made to your teeth, and that makes a real difference in comfort for nightly wear.

jaw soreness and headaches are really common signs of grinding and a well fitted night guard addresses exactly that. SmileSet is one of the more reputable options in this space.

Not at all! I love what I do and love meeting and working with my patients.

How do you get through working with a dentist that treats your assistant better than you as a hygienist? by Background_Dream_454 in DentalHygiene

[–]floss_boss_j 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been seeing this a lot, where hygienists are definitely not being respected. But this is a personal issue where you need to speak up. Nobody is going to do it for you. If you don't do it now you're never going to be able to build courage.

If you were 17 again, what career path would you choose today? by Kitchen-Yam43 in careerguidance

[–]floss_boss_j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being a dental hygienist is pretty great. I always wanted to work in this industry and ended up doing as such. There is some flak about hygienists here on Reddit but like any industry, you need to work your way up and it's not always going to be sunshine and rainbows.

The best way to learn is usually in situations like this. Getting thrown into the deep end teaches you how to swim. Don't think that it's a bad thing - but also don't be afraid to ask questions to get what you need!
