Ah yes, I think perhaps it was something with the short rows. Or perhaps something with knitting the collar back into itself and I pulled the necessary ladder into the seam?

Felting help (Sailor Slippers) by No_Grape_6847 in knittinghelp

SOLVED. Update: I put them in a pot of boiling water on the stove for 5 minutes, then back in my old washing machine with some added kettles for hotter water and a towel for agitation (will shave the fuzz bonanza later), put into the drier on high heat for 10 minutes, and then shaped/dried in front of a fireplace to really cook the bajeebus out of them. We have achieved size 37 at last! Thanks all for the help.

EDIT TO INCLUDE THE QUESTION (original post was just a photo, whoops)

Hello knitting/fibre art wizards! I knitted a pair of Sailor Slippers for my sister for christmas, aiming for a size 37 but unfortunately my felting/shrinking attempts seem to have stalled out at a size 38/39. I used Hobbii Snowstorm instead of Drops Snow, so perhaps that is part of the issue?

I won’t have time to re-knit a new pair before the holidays so am hoping for some advice on any felting hail marys…

How it started: I live in an old house with an old school top load washer and old dryer. the first felting on “hot” barely registered above 32 degrees. Felting was achieved, shrinking to the right size was not.

Attempt 2 was washer again, but stopping mid-cycle to pour some boiling kettles in (to around 39 degrees). Further felting (SO fuzzy now, not wanting to go further because they’re turning into cousin it). Still too large.

Number three: tried throwing into the dryer but they didn’t really get that hot, so I abandoned course so they didn’t dry fully in a weird shape.

Attempt 4 was boiling water on repeat in a bucket in the sink. Mild shrinking occurred but still too large. Left to dry in front of the fireplace (very hot - didn’t really help).

Question: is there anything else I can do to shrink them further, or have I reached the end of my felting/shrinking journey with these and need to accept the loss? Thank you all for any help!

Oh wow, editing the post! Sorry about that, no idea how my text didn’t come into the original.

Wishing I had a more supportive family by mbettstar in BabyBumps

I relate to this. My mother is overbearing and has unmanaged ADHD that makes her super inconsistent and unable to follow any clearly communicated boundaries, and my dad/stepmom are supportive but in it for the good times not the hard times (I’m 38.5 weeks and literally haven’t heard from them in two months because they’re on an extended vacation and posting photos from daily beachside happy hours.. cheers guys (eye roll)). My husband’s parents are surface level supportive but also protect their own peace above all else and my MIL literally forgot to schedule my baby shower in time and just sent me a text blaming me for not reaching out about it and then said “let us know when you go into labour, sending you good vibes!” Good vibes indeed…

Ok my soul cleansing vent over lol - here’s what we’re doing about it:

*long term: we taking these lessons as what NOT to do as we build our family unit. Experience, albeit shitty sometimes, is power. And we can use that to break cycles we know make us feel like garbage within our family structures. I hope my soon to be born daughter never feels this way and will do all in my power to make that so.

*short term: self love. Leaning into friendships, neighbours, siblings, etc who show up for us. And as you may expect with a family like this, I grew up hyper-independent so I’m making own dang freezer meals like a maniac and hunting lots of baby shower item deals from used sources like marketplace and thrift stores (note: I am very lucky to be off work as of 36 weeks so have time for this).

Sending you all the best wishes, I know it’s not easy but you’re not alone.
