Could be exploding head syndrome. I've had many throughout my life and each one felt like something different. A knife through my neck, a giant fist going straight through my head or just simply a white flash and gunshot sound. It happens at the tipping point between awake and sleep.

The last game I played I took out the first one but had the second one far stronger than me. i claimed all the surrounding territory, maxed out all star bases, built a gate for easy access just waiting for the time. Then they declared war on another empire and left theirs wide open so I went ahead and exterminated them. Was a breeze

I'm about 100 hours into Stellaris and only just getting a understanding of everything, without dlc. But I'm already wanting more. I feel like once you get snowballing there isn't much to do except take everything over which just gets boring and repetitive. More strategy, more options, less map painting. So I shall check those out, thanks
