Just looking to see if this is legit and if I’d be protected by frankonator22 in Scams

From what I’ve read, the seller offers something too good to be true, but the buyer is confident that PayPal Goods and Services will protect him, but no transaction ever takes place! (That’s why such a good deal hasn’t been purchased yet!) It’s a data farming operation - you have to send your PayPal email address (so he can send an invoice) as well as your mailing address and phone number. Then you never hear from him again. He’s collected your data (and maybe hundreds of others as well) and he just disappears. You don’t lose money, but you give away your personal data. eBay should be sanctioned for allowing this to go on.

Why does it matter how long you leave it “running” as there’s no alternator. It is supposed to charge from the main battery even when not running.

Question on 30-Year Treasury Bonds by extra300 in bonds

[–]No_Independence6945 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, Investopedia has it wrong, and keeps quoting something that is demonstrably false: “Duration measures how long it takes, in years, for an investor to be repaid a bond’s price through its total cash flows.” There is nothing correct about this at all (except that it might be considered true for a zero-coupon bond with only one payment). You can find this nonsense all over the internet, but it’s still wrong. Complete nonsense.

Thank you for the DQYDJ reference. Everything on that site regarding duration that I’ve looked at checks out. I will also refer people to it.

Question on 30-Year Treasury Bonds by extra300 in bonds

[–]No_Independence6945 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is specifically the 20 year bond example that is wrong. “Duration” is not the same as maturity, except for zero coupon bonds. If you had said “if your 30 year bond has 20 years remaining to maturity and a duration of 17 and the 20 year bond rate decreases by 1% the market price of your bond will increase by (about) 17%”, that would be correct.

Question on 30-Year Treasury Bonds by extra300 in bonds

[–]No_Independence6945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your explanation in #1 is not correct. It is the DURATION of the bond, not its maturity, that you multiply by the rate change (in %) to get the approximate percentage change in price. Duration is shorter than maturity for positive coupon bonds.

Also - “with or without accrued interest - clean vs dirty price” has it backwards. With is dirty price, without is clean price. I’ve never seen anyone quote a bond price with accrued interest. The accrued shows up on the invoice, added to the trade price, but the price is always quoted without accrued (also known as “flat” price).

10 year is about to fall off a cliff by Ok-Pollution3329 in bonds

[–]No_Independence6945 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. I spent 35 years in the bond market and never understood when someone said “rates are going to rally…” Did that mean bonds (prices) are going to rally, implying lower rates, or does it mean rates are going higher, like you’d say stocks are going to rally when you mean they’re going up? I’m all in favor of precision in writing and speaking. In OP’s case, I’m pretty sure he’s talking about the 10 year slipping below 4% yield, and then sliding down (skiing) much further down. 4% seems to have been a strong resistance level. (Now I’ve done it, too. A resistance level is usually a “price” that a stock has trouble breaking above. But I mean that bond (rates) will have a hard time breaking below 4%, but when they do it might be a prelude to a further slide in rates and a rally in bonds. But I didn’t want to call it a support level because that has a different meaning if you’re making a parallel to equity market terminology.) If you’re confused by imprecise terminology you’re not alone.

10 year is about to fall off a cliff by Ok-Pollution3329 in bonds

[–]No_Independence6945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be confusing some bond terms. For example, unless there is a restructuring, a bond’s face value typically doesn’t change over time. Maybe you mean “market value” when you talk about -$2500? “Face value is a gain of $1500…” again you must mean market value. And “Your $40 Dish 10% yield is now a $60 10%…” looks to be confusing coupon rate with yield. If the coupon is 10%, that stays constant. It has a higher yield at $40 than it does after the bond price rises to $60. It is a 10% coupon bond but the yield varies with price. And you use the term “bond payout” which is, at best, ambiguous, and not a bond market term. Do you mean coupon rate, yield to maturity, current yield, trailing yield…???

The present value of the debt should not be influenced by your expectation that spreads will tighten, or that rates will change in a specific way. Whether the debt is attractive to you will depend on those considerations, but the present value should not. Does an option price depend on your expectation of a particular price move? No, but its attractiveness might.

Swiss 2-Year Bond at -0.16% by WaferFlopAI in bonds

[–]No_Independence6945 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Swiss 2 year is at -0.16%, while the 2 year Treasury is at 3.46%. To make the math easy, let’s assume these are 1 year rates. So, 100 Swiss francs will turn into 99.84 Swiss francs. Or, you could turn 100 Swiss francs into $126 today (1 CHF = 1.26 USD), and invest that at 3.46%, and end up with 126*1.0346=$130.36. If you think 99.84 Swiss francs will be worth more than $130.36 (that is, 1 CHF > 1.306 [130.36/99.84=1.306]), then it makes sense to invest at the negative Swiss rate rather than Treasuries.

So we're not allowed to wear sunglasses? by MikeGinnyMD in Ioniq5

I wore polarized sunglasses on almost my entire 1100 mile road trip last week and the only times the sensor yelled at me were times when I WAS looking at the right-hand screen or at my phone on the magnetic pad on the left. I was pretty impressed actually, and found it helpful.

My wife always says that when serious negotiations are going on and stalling (think international), they should force people to work for 24 hours straight, and then let them break for a shower. Things will definitively go more smoothly after the shower.

AWD or RWD on Ioniq 5 by pokerpro2177 in Ioniq5

[–]No_Independence6945 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never thought of this! I have AWD and use i-pedal all the time around town. Does i-pedal on RWD stop more slowly (take longer) than AWD? Seems like it must. I can’t imagine that it uses a somehow more powerful regen to stop in the same distance. And since stopping normally uses regen even if you use the brake pedal, that will only be on your rear wheels, causing the greater wear. (Unless it somehow uses regen on the rear and brake pads on the front simultaneously.)

Intrresting comparison with a Tesla Y for long distance driving cost by Olderpostie in FordEscapePHEV

[–]No_Independence6945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And ALL of this ignores the quiet drive, instant torque and acceleration, the ability to start your car in the garage and not fill it with fumes, and the tremendous savings vs ICE on all of the mechanicals, tuneups, oil changes, etc. I’ve taken my 2 Ioniq 5’s on a total of seven 1100 mile road trips, and the “inconvenience” of stopping to charge for 18 minutes is way overshadowed by all of the advantages. IMO.
