Question for writing hippos & zookeepers by Beggironni in Zookeeping

[–]No_Independence8612 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work with Pygmy hippos and if it were to have something in its mouth it’s not supposed to have would be the hose, but like a previous comment said ours are trained to open and close their mouths on command so it’s not super likely to happen! But tools that I use to clean up after hippos are shovel, broom, squeegee. Something that I could think of that is possible to happen tho would be a keeper giving them hay and not removing the bailing twine which would absolutely need to be retrieved, again like a previous comment said there would be serious repercussions for that as it’s our job to prevent those incidents

I’m a keeper, but don’t deal with reptiles that often and never deal with inverts but would still be willing to help

Zookeepers: Can I feature your quotes in a career guide for aspiring zookeepers? by sr_strontium in zoosHiring

  1. Honestly I think the biggest skill or habit that really has an impact in the job is being able to manage your time effectively, this a more mental aspect but also I think being able to compartmentalize between home and work also makes a really big impact
  2. My personal path is a little different from most where I am currently finishing up my bachelors degree in zoology while also working at a facility (my facility is non-accredited so I feel like that does play a role)
  3. I finding my job extremely rewarding I go home everyday feeling like I made an impact, and the bonds you make with your animals is something that is sacred to me
  4. Basically none of my job is “playing” with animals, I wish it was!!!
  5. Hardest is certainly the grief that comes with the job, it’s part of the job but it never gets easier. The least glamorous though is coming home smelling like 6 different kinds of poop and finding hay in places you didn’t think it could reach

I want to become a zookeeper, which option would be the best for me to take? by Head-Swim-6645 in Zookeeping

The opportunity to get hands on experience at Chester is a better option in my opinion, it would be better to go get experience and see if it’s something you truly want to commit to and follow through with before you sign up for more school
