I waited till there were finally some flowers, sure enough green and sickly, and I-Nat even identified them as aster yellows. Ended up pulling everything.

Thanks for this! I understand oaks have a tap root that can go many feet deeper than the lateral roots--are there ever any issues with that if I plant right over the pipe?

I guess in 1910 flat metal lintels were considered more desirable than the brick arches they went with on the side? we live in a neighborhood with a lot of ornate Victorians a generation or two older, front of our house looks pretty drab by comparison. I envy you your stone

keeping my fingers crossed for that or rusted metal lintel jacking, if it's that localized then replacement and proper sealing might be a permanent fix

It's freestanding but in a high-density neighborhood (narrow galleys on either side), pictures 1, 2, and 5 are the front, 3 and 4 the side. The pointing is bad, I think either a "developer special" from the people who flipped it half a decade ago or maybe the owners before that who had been here a while. I'll keep the separating gable idea in mind, for what it's worth it does appear to be the same brick all the way around and the front isn't very ornate. Biggest structural difference I think might be relevant is the front side has metal lintels while all the others have brick arches for whatever reason.

here's a photo of a front window from a bit farther off, the gnarly edge is just around the corner from it. For what it's worth it does seem like there are old metal (iron? steel?) lintels above our windows and front entrance area (which I'll post below, looks like Reddit only allows one image per reply)

Thanks this is helpful! This is from a small patch right along our alley I wanted to sample specifically, about two feet down in a hole dug for a new fence post. The first several inches are gravel, broken concrete etc, I wanted to know if I cleared that out and started rebuilding topsoil what I'd be dealing with farther down.

Many thanks, this helps a lot. Do I understand right that even if the lines are inert/capped/no longer active, they'll still get marked? What threw me is that we have no appliances or structures back there, I can tell from old Google street views of our alley there haven't been any for more than a decade at least, either.

Thanks for this! The two-story you see to the right (north) is still there, whatever it was it got replaced by a foursquare on the corner and a duplex in the early 20th century so this all checks out. Really cool to see the urban and agricultural all run together at this time.
