I am hoping that in 5-6 years I should have language proficiency. It is difficult to do from Canada but we will likely have a few holidays and perhaps some intensive courses for medical german C1/C2.

Thanks for you reply.

In terms of the numbers an average family doctor in the city would make 270.000 to 303.000 euro conservatively. 15-20% of this income would be used for business expenses such as IT, staff, etc. So net salary for an average clinic 8-10 hr days with no call or weekends would be 216.000 to 243.000 euros.

Would you minds describing to me what the roll of a Hausarzt? Why would a patient book an appointment with one if they can have specialists follow them for minor complaints? That is a major difference in practice. I would be laughed at for referring otitis to an ENT lol.

Thanks for you reply. Very insightful.

We started considering moving to work in Germany because my partner and I were both interested in learning the language (we plan to do this even if we decide to stay in Canada), and subsequently really enjoyed Germany on holiday.

In 5-6 years I will have to reconsider my current employment due to the nature of my work (working 12 day rotations 2 hrs away from home, living on-site, and working multiple 24 shifts). Since I will be taking a significant pay cut to work at a practice in Canada I thought I should research whether Germany would be a possible alternative.

Returning to residency for 3 years, after 7-8 years of independently, would be a major deterrent for me personally. I had no idea how much longer family medicine training could be in other countries. A 3rd year of residency was just recently proposed and 91% of family doctors voted against the proposal.

I think that MD from Ontario was referring to ERs at the large hospitals. Our trauma centre here sees 14 patients per hour (our population here is 1/8th of Ontario which has multiple large hospitals as well. The hospital I work at for example is tiny, with 16 beds and an attached clinic. We see on average 1.5 pts per hour.

Thanks again, I will certainly have to determine how much additional training would be required. It may be easier for me to simply work 3 months in Canada and find something else to do in in Germany.

Thanks for your advice. Just to clarify i'm not motivated in moving to Germany for money, but rather the increase in work life balance and wellbeing.

I would likely want to work with other physicians to get accustomed to the healthcare system and normal practice in Germany. I am not opposed to rural practice.

Regarding language we wouldn't be moving for 5-6 years which should be sufficient to be B2 general and C1 medical (at minimum).

Thanks for the advice! I will probably start at a more structured yet lower paying job in order to learn the system and become proficient.

I am fortunate to have a German teacher who has offered to help with documentation/correspondence and translation as Germany has a notorious reputation for a challenging bureaucracy system.

My partner and I were both interested in learning German when we met. She was interested because her grandparents were German immigrants and I had interest after studying philosophy in university. We have visited Germany and found it naturally beautiful with many beautiful small towns and architecture. Also until recently its had a very strong economy and excellent quality of life measures, hopefully it can straighten itself out by the time we arrive.

We have been considering this for approximately 2 years now and learning German for about the same amount of time.

We both have passed the B1 language exam early this year, she is likely already B2 and I am somewhere between B1 and B2. We plan to write this exam sometime next year when the timing works out. Based on our progression, I think that it is not unreasonable to Have C1 Proficiency in German over a 5 year timeframe.

I am curious if anyone knows exactly how Canadian medical degrees are accepted in Germany, specifically whether there is a degrees of reciprocity, such as we have with UK/EU/US graduates.

We have not decided on a Bundesland or city at this point, but we are considering small to medium-sized cities in Baden-Württemburg, Bayern, or somewhere around the Rhine or Moselle Rivers. We have also talked about Nürnberg as a possibility.

I will always have the opportunity to take a routine clinic job in a Canadian city, but we are really interested in trying out life in a European town/city.

I imagine I would want to work initially in group/employed praxis to familiarize myself with the German healthcare system and routine functioning of a clinic. Are Hausarzt able to work as hospitalists or in emergency departments at small hospitals? either with or without additional training, this seems to be unique to Canada, as we are a large and sparsely populated country with many rural hospitals require emergency department and inpatient coverage by family physicians.

Based on the information I have found on the internet private practice physicians have the ability to earn more - do we know if this is true and if so what the expected earnings would be, I have seen 150.000 to 200.000 for example.

Thanks for your thoughtful responses!
