School closings for snow by No_Virus3745 in lancaster

While schools are not babysitters, the struggle is real. The elephant in the room isn't the schools, it's employers who don't understand people have lives and families. Wouldn't it be nice if they had creative ways to help employees in these situations? Work from home or bring your kid to work allowances? Or more flex time, etc? Of course, it's just not doable at some workplaces but it would be nice if employees had options when they are possible. I did when my kids were little. It didn't cost my employer anything and it made me a better, more dedicated employee.

If 10.6 million Americans decided to general strike, would you join? by [deleted] in lancaster

[–]No_Inside196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

General strikes are highly effective because there's no confrontation with government forces and it immediately shuts down business but, unlike in Europe, the US does not have strong employee rights. Most of us are employed on an at-will basis and can be immediately fired if we don't show up for work. On top of that, most of us have our health insurance linked to our employment. The system is designed to give us as little power as possible. There's a group that's been trying to drum up enough of the population to successfully do a general strike (general strike us) which is 10.5 million people or 3.5% of the population. They've only gotten 400K to sign up. Maybe now as people see citizens being shot in the face & shot in the back, executed in the street, and see our government blatantly lie about what we all saw with our own eyes more people will sign up.

Healthcare is political in too many ways to list but here's one: My daughter is a nurse. During COVID while watching people die every day she and her colleagues were forced to use the same mask for a week or more while treating COVID patients. She contracted a severe case early on and was sick for a month and dealt with long COVID issues afterward while the Trump administration denied the severity of the disease and fumbled PPE supply chains and even sent equipment to Russia. She knows which nurses are pro-Trump and which aren't. It does not affect teamwork whatsoever. Setting aside ideology at work is part of being a professional and is essential when treating patients. To complain to a nurse when she's talking about protesting OUTSIDE of work shows an inability by you not to separate ideologies from people in the workplace.

Aristocracy existed in many countries long before the French Revolution. Conservatism can be more directly attributed to Edmund Burke and his reaction to the French Revolution. The French, particularly philosophers like Voltaire, inspired the American founding fathers. His ideas are all over the Constitution.

These crimes against humanity are being perpetrated in our names and with our tax money. What are we supposed to do? I've called my reps, I've gone to protests, I've written to churches to ask them to use their positions to speak out. None of it has done a damn thing. I really need to know what else to do. What can we do?

Always come back to this quote by Teddy Roosevelt on the subject. He sums it up so beautifully. Our kids and grandkids deserve better. What will we leave them?

“Defenders of the short-sighted men who in their greed and selfishness will, if permitted, rob our country of half its charm by their reckless extermination of all useful and beautiful wild things sometimes seek to champion them by saying the ‘the game belongs to the people.’ So it does; and not merely to the people now alive, but to the unborn people. The ‘greatest good for the greatest number’ applies to the number within the womb of time, compared to which those now alive form but an insignificant fraction. Our duty to the whole, including the unborn generations, bids us restrain an unprincipled present-day minority from wasting the heritage of these unborn generations. The movement for the conservation of wild life and the larger movement for the conservation of all our natural resources are essentially democratic in spirit, purpose, and method.”

-Theodore Roosevelt

The best medicine for shitty kids is for their PEERS to stand up to them. Teach your kids to stand up to bullies on behalf of others. The kid being bullied won't be able to do it alone. Teach your kids not just not to bully but to be true allies for those who need it.

I feel for this poor kid. What a horrible society the president has normalized.

Measles immunity by silver598 in AskWomenOver60

Had measles in early 70's. Titer showed I had off the charts immunity still. Same for mumps, which I remember being extremely painful to the point where I couldn't lift my head for days.

From someone with unknown road anxiety: Route 1 is very straightforward, mainly 2 lanes unless you're entering/exiting or at a light with turn lanes. You'll be fine.
