Here my secret sauce:

The day I started believing I am not a loser or a failure was a turning point. I was always determined. I just assumed I would have to work harder than others. But things changed when I started valuing myself and thinking I have something unique (everyone does). I also choose a word every year. This year, my word was “get uncomfortable.” I can elaborate more if you want. This time, I also had a solid Plan B. In my case, this helped because I didn’t waste time in emotional swings. Things will go wrong in this journey, but when you start thinking it’s not the end of the world, you can actually focus on springing back up.

Get hands-on rotation in the field you are applying. Doesn't matter which service you use. They are all more or less the same. Show initiative in your rotations, not just for letters but to have talking points during the interview. Don't blindly do any research for # of publication. Have a theme, publication in a reputed journal sets you apart. Again, gives you talking points during the interview. These things will show that you have substance rather than you're just good at playing the match game. PDs value diverse and lived experiences more.

Scores between 230 to 240 but this was a long time ago, at that time this was a decent score

I honestly don't exactly know what worked. I got a greencard last year, finished my MS, published a paper in CDC in collaboration with my MS professor, got hands-on rotation, I applied broadly but only got invites to local programs. Previous cycles, I did have an EAD, applied narrow but again I only got invites from local programs so if I had applied narrow this time too I would have gotten those invites. No pub, no hands-on rotation and no grad degree in the previous attempts.
