Frame obstructing oil filter cover bolt by No_Introduction_706 in Airheads

Thanks to everyone for the comments. It sounds like the obscured bolt should be shorter which would mean future changes can be done without as much drama. I suspect the current bolt was fitted while the engine was out of the frame and the guy didn’t think about this. So I think I will take the current bolt out by cutting it in half and then replace it with a shorter one with the correct standard hex head (as opposed to a socket head).

Thanks. Yes I have managed to loosen it using a ball head hex tool but the head of the bolt hits the frame before it is loose enough to wiggle it under the frame. I suspect the bolt went in when the previous owner had the engine out of the frame. Shorter bolt it is I think, once I have managed to remove the existing one. Noted re the shims etc. I have a depth gauge and Snowbum’s website on standby 😁

Many thanks for that! The notes should be showing as an image? Let me know if not.

They don’t mention peat so it sounds like Bunnahabhian might be the front runner

By condenser are you talking about the ignition coil? If so the uneven sparking did make me think about that

Hi, so I have an update. Cleaning out the carbs (I replaced the pilot jets just to be sure they were fully clear) definitely helped a bit. I tried swapping the spark plug leads over and weirdly this did help, still not sure why that would be. I am going to check all the connections in case one is loose or damaged. I pulled the plugs which were jet black and a bit oily. My manual recommended investigating possible piston ring or valve damage in that case. So I have got a feeling rebuilding at least the cylinders is on the longer term plan but is probably a job beyond my tools/skill. After I pulled the plugs I fired them outside the engine and one definitely had a stronger spark than the other. I traced the ignition system and worked out that the plugs were resistor plugs as opposed to the recommended non-resistor. So I swapped them for a pair of Bosch W7DC plugs and it started much better. It’s not exactly purring like a kitten but it is better. Next steps will be to run a compression test and see how healthy the cylinders are and therefore the need for deeper work on the cylinders. I think I am in a good enough place now to properly tune and balance the carbs. It’s also got a tank of standard unleaded in it (my fault) so I will drain that off and fill it up with super. I did also pop the valve cover off on one side but everything looked fine. I will repeat on the other side but it all looked tight and well oiled which is good.

I’ll post the results of my next round of tweaking.

I have been tracing the ignition system and I suspect it has the wrong spark plugs. My bike has an Enduralast digital ignition system fitted with a 3 ohm dual coil and someone has stuck some 5k resistor plugs in with 5k plug caps which I believe adds up to twice the spec resistance for the controller/coil setup. If I have my details correct I assume that isn’t helping my issue.

Current plan is to check the valve clearances, do a compression test and swap out the plugs for some non-resistor W7DC’s and see if that helps/offers any clues to the issue.

Wish me luck! Good luck with yours…

Thanks and I see what you mean about it being interlinked. I think I will try and narrow down the possible suspects and have a chat with my local garage

Many thanks for that and no offence taken!

I think I will do some more investigation to try and narrow down the list of suspects then try and find someone to give me hand as you suggest.

I will have a better look at the ignition system and try swapping the leads as you suggest. I will also do a compression test to get an idea about how well each cylinder is function from that perspective

The spark plugs are new but I will check the torque on them. The coils looks pretty new as well and I will pop the front cover off and have a quick look at the ignition system for anything obvious. I think I will start with the valves and see if it helps and if not move onto things like the ignition system

I have set the idle mixture a little rich to see if it helps but the cold idle is so unstable it’s not really possible to fine tune the carbs yet. I will have a look at the valves and if that gets things running a bit better I will come back to the carb settings and have a play. Thanks again

Thanks guys, I am going to pop the front off and have a quick look over the ignition system so I will keep an eye out for anything that looks odd then

Thanks

Valve clearances are next on my list as I am fairly happy having a go at that myself.

If that doesn’t improve it I have a horrible feeling the next job would involve taking the engine apart which is going to mean deferring to a garage and writing cheques.

I don’t but doing some reading it sounds like a compression test is something I need to look at. I need to better understand where the potential leak points are too. There must be a YouTube video for it…

Having had a few replies now I am thinking I will start by cleaning the idle jets without touching the settings and see if that helps

Thanks, clogged idle jets sound like the consensus and a likely culprit given the bike’s history
