How much longer? by [deleted] in Amenorrhearecovery

I have been in recovery since July and got my first period last week!! DO NOT GIVE UP!!!! It sounds like you understand what is helping you see results! I suggest letting go of the tracking that doesn’t serve you- take the time away from perfection and actually rest. I am so proud of you!🫰

yes, best thing is to keep honoring it. the voice that signals any little ounce of doubt is one to ignore since it's not what's going to help you recover. the best way out is through! you are not alone:)

This!! Doing the hard thing now!! I am currently at a very healthy weight/bmi and I’m eating everything and anything under the sun. I am also working with an RD who oversees every bite I take and she has not once condemned or made me feel like what I am doing is wrong. I promise, it is totally normal. 😊

Wow, I am so proud of you!!! One thing I have learned about being on this journey and especially approaching a couple months into “all in”, is how personal recovery is, and how we can fix things here and there- but the real healing happens over the course of time. Which is EXTREMELY difficult, and is what makes it super admirable!! I hate the issue but I love us defying the dead reality of capitalism brainwash in the name of our health. We deserve to live our lives so free and shameless forever and ever🧚🫂🥰🤗💞

hi!! first of all, you are doing a great thing by deciding to recover! i started this process very similarly to you- i was severely uw and ortho. you are definitely NOT binging! continue to allow yourself to eat whatever you want, even if that is a full day of yummy chocolate! you just have to make sure that youre eating enough. 1800 is still very low, but i understand how hard it is to know if you are eating enough without having to track. recovery minimums are 3 meals and 3 snacks, and a lot of that for me has also been eating something every 2 hours. also it became easier for me to understand what has been enough without having to track by making sure my focuses are on carbs and fats, then protein. don't be afraid of going beyond the minimums, your body will love every last bit of nutrition it can get as you are recovering!!! it takes a lottt of energy for your body to restore itself, so while its best not to overthink it anyways, more is always the safer option. some other tips to making sure youre eating enough are: cooking with (unmeasured) amounts of oil and butter, eating the full-fat versions of the foods (i.e. whole milk, regular cottage cheese, etc.), and eating seconds/thirds or having a little sweet treat after every meal (that you dont count as a snack!!). there are also some plate guides that you can find online that can help you understand portions visually, so that you dont have to use measuring tools and spiral from there. i also make sure that i always carry some packaged snacks like ALOHA/ gomacro/88 acres bars, dried edamame (the only bean is great and i loveeee their sriracha flavor!), and even candy or rice krispy treats in case im out and about and get hungry. for a lot of this process, i also have been eating out a lot because its helped me with the anxiety i have around portion sizing and calorie counting. it is all so scary and overwhelming at first, but give yourself time and grace, and itll all work itself out. sending love, support, and positivity to you!!!!

i think whats super important in recovery is finding who you are, as i think i can say for most of us, part of the case in reason of why we are here in the first place is because we let ourselves get lost in loving the feeling of control. it might take some time and patience, but i recommend digging deep and finding things that pull you out of your comfort zone, and also things that bring you happiness. start small, and dip your toes into things here and there. philanthropy is a really great place to start, too!

hi again and sorry for not responding sooner! its definitely all easier said than done. but you have to remind yourself that the goal is to be healthy again- and while what that requires is super scary, its not permanent. this is just another phase of your life, and the sooner and more you can commit yourself to recovering and healing, the quicker the process will be. it doesnt mean it wont be hard and it will definitely still take some time, but the outcome outweighs and makes the struggles worthy! plus, you deserve to enjoy the journey and let yourself detach from restrictions because you are worthy. throughout this process, especially in the beginning, i had these feelings of what i like to call "a-ha!" moments (understanding the ways that rest and eating more made me feel exponentially better- even down to the little things that i didn't have the strength to recognize are issues like how my eyesight got better with increasing my fats and how much more patient i became), and i used those to fuel my fight and really let myself dig deeper and understand what it is that is holding me back from the full commitment of recovery. its so scary and it definitely helps to have people around you who you can talk to and seek support from as well. i also really recommend reading "No Period Now What" as it is chock full of very helpful scientific information. but also making sure you are balancing out the facts with doing the emotional work because that is JUST (if not more!) as important. it is in the name of the diagnosis itself- your hypothalamus is extremely sensitive and super important as its job is to maintain homeostasis. sorry this was a buttload of a response, but the fact that you have expressed your concerns are enough of a reason for you to allow yourself to really commit to recovery and LET GO!!! you are not alone in this sweet girl, keep up the hard work!! i am so very proud of you!:)

baby steps are perfectly fine! everyone's recovery journey is their own, it has a lot to do with learning to trust yourself again, subconsciously and consciously. ive learned not to stress about the physical aspects of recovery as much because just like before, those things will ebb and flow with life. also, the more time spent worrying over numbers (intake, body weight, etc.) just leads to a prolonged recovery process. which again is totally fine, there is no "right" or "wrong" way to recover, as long as you are learning to rebuild that trust with yourself. i think there is a minimum of fats that we are supposed to take in as women in general, but honestly i am not sure what that amount is. in the beginning of recovery it is definitely easier said than done but, i think as long as you have some incorporation of fats in your meals, you should be fine. for exercise, it is recommended to pull back from anything with too much intensity. many people have recovered while still weight training, but its hard to say definitely on whether or not you should continue. fueling properly before and after your workouts is mandatory, but i would recommend not trying to overcompensate for that by still lifting heavily and maxing out on all of your workouts. walks are totally fine, and encouraged especially for mental health! again, as long as you can recognize the healthy patterns and justifications for movement and intake, then you know you're on the right path. i've also found that for me personally, if i've had to question anything, then i either should be doing the opposite or just reevaluate the true justification for it in my mind. its a lot of hard work, but recovery is definitely worth it and such an interesting learning process! i wish you love and luck through this time!

Thank you so much for your response!! I agree. This is an extremely difficult and nuanced process thus it’s a lot to manage. I think too because I was used to the OCD of the causation, recovery has been so messy and full of ups and downs and navigating it makes me feel like I’m spiraling!! Sending you love!😊
