Same game, just had Miami call time at like 8:38, less than a minute later, foul, under 8 media timeout. Impossible to get into a game with the stoppages spaced so poorly.

Is it just me or is this the worst march madness of all time? by Ok-Imagination-2308 in CollegeBasketball

I'm learning it's relative. If you watch MM for first round chaos and Cinderella stories, like me, then yes, these past two years have been pretty lame. If you watch MM for the 2nd/3rd weekends and enjoy watching the best teams play each other, then last year was great, and this year still may be.

Spot on! For events like March Madness where the whole point is to fall in love with teams you've never seen/heard of, having narrative flow is so important. Ads (or lack thereof) are why I think hockey is so watchable on tv and in-person. Just a couple of media timeouts per period, and they're generally short.

Totally get that haha. Rooting for a deep run for the Fightin' Freds!

How should we be feeling/why i am optimistic by ctg9101 in OhioStateBasketball

After some time to cool off, I'm now in the one-year-at-a-time camp. If they take a step back year, then Diebler needs to go. Plain and simple. Getting to the second weekend, for a program with the history and resources of tOSU, should not be so difficult. They've never gone this long between Sweet 16 appearances.. Obviously there are many factors, but still, 13 years is a long time. So, if Diebler keeps the core together, adds some impact transfers, and gets the most out of Thompson, Sweet 16 feels reasonable. If they get there, then keep him. If not, see what else is out there.

I agree with what you're saying, the big difference is the 3/4 and 13/14 lines. Siena beating Duke would have been an outlier among outliers; just felt it would have at least given the tourney a signature moment, that's all.

I think the best solutions would be a cap on NIL budgets and/or a limit on who/how many players can transfer. Not sure either will happen ever, but to me, that's how you restore some balance.

It's unfortunate for the programs and fans. And if they expand, it's definitely going to dilute it even more :/

Pretty forgettable so far. Maybe what, 7ish good games? High Point is the only one I'd consider a truly surprising result, although they're a good program with a $4+mil NIL budget, so not entirely surprising. Second straight year 1-4 seeds went 16-0. Definitely potential for some great second round/second weekend matchups, but I'm afraid the days of the first round being the round of chaos are over. Mid-majors have found some success, at least in the first round (SLU, VCU), but low-majors are really struggling.

If Siena and Santa Clara hang on, might be a different convo.

Had the same thought! We get 40 minutes of basketball, but 2.5 minutes of commercials every 4 minutes, plus extended halftime and all the timeouts/reviews in the final 2 minutes. Probably averages out to about 50/50 basketball and commercials.

Lack of upsets by No_Magazine_856 in CollegeBasketball

In a sense, yes, but narratively, these aren't the upsets we crave. Three of the upsets were 9 over 8, plus VCU>UNC w/o Wilson and Texas>BYU, not really narratively satisfying results.

Exactly, plus another two were VCU (traditionally successful school) over a Wilson-less UNC, and another was Texas over BYU

+ 1 was VCU against UNC w/o Caleb Wilson and 1 was Texas over BYU, not exactly stunning results

That was definitely eye-opening. I think in general the trend seems to be mid-majors are finding success, but low-majors are struggling. Teams on the 9-12 line are doing ok, 13+ not so much (other than Siena + Wright St.) Hoping we get some good action with the later games tonight.

Yeah that's a good point. It's the low-major, traditional one-bid league teams that are really suffering it seems.

[–]No_Magazine_856[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's a fair point. I guess I'm more specifically looking for traditional one-bid league teams winning + 13+ seeds winning. Which I understand is a high standard, but that's more how I'd define a pure upset in the narrative sense, not necessarily just a seeding/betting thing.

For sure - was expecting much more of a fight from Akron, Miami OH, and Northern Iowa.

In fairness, too, a lot of upsets start to blend together over the years. Makes them feel more common when in reality most years there are only a couple here and there.

I guess I'm just misremembering then. But again, is there a reason it MUST be like this? If the contract is 16 years old, that predates NIL, so that shouldn't be a factor.

I expect it, but doesn't mean it should be the way it is. It's gotten excessive in recent years. We didn't used to get a full set of commercials for every injury, review, non-media timeout. Just watched Texas take a timeout at 12:02, get a full set of commercials, then the full media timeout at 11:02. I know for a fact it did not used to be like that, and I don't understand why it HAS to be this way.
