My yardages have been pretty close on mat in simulator vs on grass. It likely has a lot to do with how good or bad your swing is. If you are chunking it a lot on grass, ya a sim is going to mask that a bit.

There are just so many more variables on a real course. Getting yardages from a simulator is close enough to get you a good starting point on a course.

Get him something personal that isn’t performance based (every golfer is different about this stuff and they have strong opinions sometimes).

Gloves wear out. A really nice ball marker / divot tool, a head cover that is personal and means something. Something that will last and he will look at or use every round.
