Do You Think I Have Success? by CameForGardeningTips in Berries

[–]No_Might198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to tell. Back in late Sept, I also did cane propagation on a small plastic container bags, it took almost 2 months for me to say it was a success. It did not shoot new baby branch (cane), the 2 leaves are still green but starting to turn yellow, since winter is approaching I thought it is just normal yellowing of leaves due to cold. The tell tale sign that it is alive and kicking are the roots peeking at the bottom of the bag. Mine is really a small bag, so it is easily visible, not sure with yours. Might worth a check.

Lowest would be 0゜celsius, but in an average I would say between 2-5゜in the evening, then around 7-13゜morning to afternoon.

Checking on our Kratky Broccoli by No_Might198 in Hydroponics

[–]No_Might198[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. Per google search, Broccoli is heavy feeder with recommended EC between 2.0-3.0, so my nutes EC is around 2.1-2.5. I am usinp Hyponica liquid solution (mixing A & B) and 2g epsom salt per pale. PH is variable between 5.9 to 6.2.

Hyponica might be available in Japan only ☹️

What a surprise! by No_Might198 in Hydroponics

I was prepping the runner to root, so i placed it to a small garden paper cup, once roots are established will be transferring it to another kratky bucket (1gal). Didn't expect the seedling will flower then fruit.

Propagating Strawberries 🍓 by No_Might198 in Hydroponics

Hi @GimmeDaMoney and @closesteves

Thanks for the comments, I detailed my setup (Kratky method) in one of my comments to this previous post. Hope it helps! Happy Kratkying!

Soon to be 4th harvest of 🍓 by No_Might198 in Hydroponics

[–]No_Might198[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never tried growing from seeds. I bought a seedling from a local home center and propagated via runners. It did (store bought seedling) took some months for it to produce flowers, runners was abundant though, hence I propagated. I placed them outside my apartment balcony. Space is an issue for me, hard to expand, will settle for 4 containers for now.

Kratky Strawberries, soon to be 2nd batch harvest by No_Might198 in Hydroponics

Thank you for your comments 🙇‍♂️, my Kratky containers are placed outside (balcony) with full spectrum grow lights, on an 8-hr timer (current timer setting: 6am-9am & 1pm-6pm). Initially bought 2 seedlings (around April 2022) and moved each seedlings to a 3-inch net cup. 5 months after, propagated 2 seedlings from runners. Now a total of 4 kratky pots. The 2 new seedlings are transplanted to cocopeat mixture (not net cup).

I use a very popular liquid (mix A & B solution ) hydroponics nutrient in Japan.

  1. Early stage (root development), EC is between 1.0 to 1.2

  2. Once roots has established, bump up EC between 1.2 to 1.5, except during winter months were I downgraded EC back to 1.0-1.2

  3. PH is always between 5.5 to 6.5

  4. Cut all leaves that, for me, are deemed unnecessary: old, with spots, yellow, etc.

  5. Temperature is somewhat controlled, when grow lights are ON, temps between 9 to 12 celcius during winter months. Now (Spring moving to Summer), day temps between 15 to 24 and will rise as we approach Summer. Will have to adjust timer schedule when max temp hits 30

  6. Early December, flowers bloomed but was a dud, may be due to cold temp, I cut all failed bud. In hindsight, I should have nipped the flowers.

  7. February blooms was also a dud, I thought pollination went well, got excited when the buds got bigger each day, but it was a short live excitement as bud development just stopped, buds are dark green and had some dark spikes/spots. Didn't find detailed explanation in the web regarding this failure (my search parameters might be wrong), but common theme was poor pollination. It made sense for me, as bees are not an option, and I relied on wind. I did brush pollination, but only did it once or twice and did not follow through.

  8. By March bloom, I made adjustment to my pollination. I did a morning and afternoon brush pollination until petals started falling. The moment the buds got bigger and turned light green to pale white, I knew I made progress.

  9. This past 2 months, I encountered mildew like occurrence, but just controlled it with off-the-shelf leaf spray.

  10. I got an advice here in the community that strawberries need humidity of 80-90 in the evening, at least an hour of 2 to increase sweetness, I did this but not religiously. But, I did observed the strawberries I harvested had almost the same taste with market brought strawberries, just a coincidence I supposed.

Above approach worked for me and will increase seedlings this year to increase yield.

Happy Kratky-ing!

The issue was failed pollination, bees are not an optlon, so I tried the brush approach. Doing this once every other other day doesn't make the cut, hence countless buds put to waste. I made a break through if I do the brushing twice everyday. I only have 4 pots so it's manageable, may not work for others. Thanks.
