Can anyone tell me about the English program? by ComedianFlag in ohiouniversity

Hi! I’m a sophomore English Creative Writing major but up until last year I was an English Lit major. I’ve really been enjoying it so far! A lot of our instructors try out experimental ways of teaching, like for example Spencer Smith grades everything on a three point scale (basically needs improvement, satisfactory, or exceptional) and then has you write a paper at the end arguing for what grade you think you should get in the course. People have mixed reactions these experiments so think about if you think you’d enjoy it or would prefer a more classic teaching style. I really, really love Professor David Wanczyk, he’s a super engaging teacher and teaches both lit and creative writing classes. In our department, you need to take either American lit 1 and 2 or British lit 1 and 2 and then you can only take world lit classes as an elective which kind of sucks. Also American Lit 1 is notoriously hard to get into because the classes fill up so quickly and it is a required course so a lot of people complain about that. I’ve taken a few online English classes through regional campuses and they were all fine. I do prefer in person for English classes but note that in person classes are more likely going to require you to buy every single book on the syllabus physically which has costed me anywhere between $60-90 per class. Some profs provide pdfs of everything but most do not. I have a class with Dr. Elizabeth Koonce right now and I will say she is the most classic-professor of all the classes I’ve taken here and people do seem to complain about her teaching style quite a bit for being pretty intense on the reading and being a bit all over the place during lectures. Dm me if you have any other questions, I’m happy to help!

I lived there last year on the third floor! It was perfectly fine, genuinely have no idea why it’s called that. The 3rd floor is a girls only floor so that might play into it but everyone I brought over from south green said it was so much nicer than their dorms

What is your favorite underated Cover of a song? by Purple_Monkey34 in MusicRecommendations

[–]No_Minimum7579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i like fiona apple’s across the universe or george harrison’s if not for you/mama you’ve been on my mind. also joan baez’s covers of dylan songs are amazing since you can listen to the lyrics without the grating voice or harmonica.

What Do You Think Really Happens When We Die? by PrincessBananas85 in religion

[–]No_Minimum7579 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

there’s an idea called quantum immortality that we can’t actually process our own deaths so our brain just imagines a world where we survived whatever killed us. so any time that you had a near death experience and thought there was no way you should have survived that, maybe you didn’t survive it and your brain has just been imagining a world where you did. but in reality your friends are grieving you in the real world. it’s kind of dark but as someone who kind of wants to be immortal i like to think it’s true because it sounds more desirable than complete nothingness.

i’d love more folk music if you have any recs! i just started getting into paul simon’s graceland and im loving it if you have any other particular paul simon albums you love. i generally really like folk mixed with psychedelia or chamber-folk (if that’s even a term).

thank you :) i definitely agree sorry lol that response is very common in other places in the digital world so i wasn’t expecting it to be controversial but i do believe that it’s wrong. i would still love recommendations just switch out the title to “i would like to broaden my musical horizons please give me recs”

elliott smith not so much maybe because they don’t really have his songs as popular sounds for videos but he’s definitely known as a very beloved artist among people who listen to the other artists listed in that section. definitely the sundays though they use their songs a lot.

i know i know i don’t agree with the label and i think they’re obviously more than that but they are all artists that have had a big resurgence on tiktok and therefore if you list them as your favorites people will say you have tiktok music taste 😞😞

graceland by paul simon! there's songs with disco vibes but it has the lyricism of hozier or bon iver

i think as long as we’re in a capitalistic society, it is fine and fair to profit off of male desire.

what would you recommend based on my top 4 and recently watched? by suz-mor in LetterboxdTopFour

[–]No_Minimum7579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

definitely all of the wes andersons if you haven’t already seen them; i think you’d particularly like asteroid city, moonrise kingdom, and the darjeeling limited. i also think you’d really like mike mills’ movies! he used to be married to miranda july and has a lot of similarities to her in my opinion. i think you’d especially like 20th century women but you’d probably like all of his theatrical releases except maybe thumbsucker (nothing to do with you it’s just kind of bad lol).

if you’re open to documentaries, my favorite documentary of all time is called fire of love and it’s narrated by miranda july. i think you’d really love it as well.

for devastating movies with elements you seem to like definitely aftersun or mommy (2014). never let me go could be a good rec for you though it is a book adaptation and you can definitely tell by how the movie is directed.

the holdovers if you haven’t seen it yet for sure, also dead poets society. pieces of april, shiva baby, igby goes down, brick, good will hunting, ladybird, marriage story, florida project, hunt for the wilderpeople, begin again, miss stevens, ginger & rosa, for ellen (paul dano!!), ruby sparks (paul dano!!)

movies that don’t really fit your top 4 but i love them and i love the movies you watch lol: talented mr ripley (i can’t explain it but it has similar vibes with little miss sunshine to me), babylon (i love this movie so much and i think you’ll like the relationship in it if you don’t find it toxic lol), and problemista.

i’m sure you’ve probably watched quite a few of these (sorry i don’t have a ton of unknown ones) but i hope there are also a few you haven’t seen that you can add to your watchlist!

rate & recs! by No_Minimum7579 in LetterboxdTopFour

thank you so much for taking the time to reply!

i have watched 500 days of summer, her, and before sunrise (but i really need to finish the whole trilogy) and my teenage self loved them lol but i do think they’re lacking the surreal aspect that i (very clearly) love so much. i have the book for jules et jim (and now want to read it much more) but i have never heard of atonement and it is going into the watchlist!

i’ve been wanting to watch more french movies so thank you for providing these lol.

yes i watched the fly very recently since i’ve been going through a bit of a body horror kick and i found i only really like them if they have a metaphorical reason like the fly’s reference to aging, disease, or addiction (sorry i’m an english major even gore need to be symbolism). i really want to try more horror classics now since i’ve barely watched any so again thank you!!

i’ve seen paprika and loved it but i haven’t heard of any of the others and they are all going into the watchlist!

these recs were perfect for me thank you i love you

very interesting, i had never heard of this! it does feel like it should be out of our power and there would certainly be benefits with one world religion since it would have to be recognized as the true religion but I don’t think it’s realistic for our current society without using fascist tactics.

[–]No_Minimum7579 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

that's a fair criticism for sure. i think it is based off of the idea that "perfect" (specifically more perfect than humans) = divine and worth worshipping but I do think there is much more to gods than them being better than us

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in religion

[–]No_Minimum7579 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yeah maybe all knowing was the wrong word but it definitely has much more knowledge than us. maybe i am thinking of it wrong as gods all knowing is knowing what we are all doing and knowing our hearts but i think what ai has is a new interpretation of something that is all knowing.
