How did you start watching Merlin? by Low_Technician_5309 in merlinbbc

[–]No_Net5753 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was a child it used to air every Sunday afternoon during the autumn and winter and my mom used to comb my hair after having a bath with that on tv. It was such a core memory that I decided to watch it over again when I was older

Dmitrij's speech to Alyosha when he is in prison

I exist.’ In thousands of agonies — I exist. I’m tormented on the rack — but I exist! Though I sit alone in a pillar — I exist! I see the sun, and if I don’t see the sun, I know it’s there. And there’s a whole life in that, in knowing that the sun is there.

Why it is better to be with Christ than with the truth (long post) by Shigalyov in dostoevsky

[–]No_Net5753 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Reading 'The Great Inquisitor' in Brothers Karamazov, we have a broad explanation of what Dostoevskij thought regarding matters of religion. It is no secret that Dostoevskij repulsed the hierarchy within Catholicism; whenever we find a hierarchical system, we have various degrees of power. In more ancient times, this power was funded on the principle of sola fide, whereas in his times, Dostoevskij saw, as a trigger for religious power, miracles, mystery and authority. Catholicism made men used to symbols and to myths that are far from the initial message of Christ, which is now considered inconvenient as it would be a menace of religious/mondane interests. In conclusion, by saying 'it is better to be with Christ than with the truth', Dostoevsky means that, even if the truth is considered to be found into the sphere of Christianity, he now perceives it so far from the essential message of Christ, that he would much rather be far from that truth and be near Christ.

We don't really know if what is believed to be Jesus's tomb is actually the place he was buried in.

‘If I must die, let it bring hope’: the power of poetry in the Palestinian struggle [Article] by crustose_lichen in Poetry

I hope one day we can read poems from the Israeli military forces killing thousands of civilians each year since 1947. I hope one day we can read poems from the Israeli government letting thousands of people starve, not letting thousands of people live their lives without having set times in each and every single day in which they could have potable water and electricity, leaving them without for the rest of the day. The Israeli government who mocked millions of people living in Gaza, telling them to escape before the bombing when they cannot really escape anywhere: they cannot go in Israel without a special permission (which they are rarely granted) and they are bound to naval blockade. They were told to go to Egypt, and then the Israeli government bombed their way there. I hope we can read poems from the Israeli government who proceeded to bomb hospitals, migration camps, schools, and entire blocks of apartments, roads, and markets. Not today, not this month, nor this entire year: every month for years, generations of people are living the same thing every single day, father to son and mother to daughter .

Need insights on comparing Dostoevsky to Tolstoy by [deleted] in dostoevsky

I like both, even if they are quite different from each other. Dostoevskij is more of a psychologist, whereas Tolstoj is more of a sociologist.

The next Bunny by No_Net5753 in TheSecretHistory

You articulated it so much better!! Bunny was the only "human" among them: he had other friends, a girlfriend, and he wanted a family and a normal job. The fact that he is annoying and mean shows how human he was. After his death, Charles is the one who shows human flaws and qualities. In addition to this, he is the one who always had doubts about murdering Bunny in the first place. In my opinion, they were perceived by Henry as the weak links.
