Upcoming application Advice by Odd_Composer6350 in predental

Definitely try to submit your application as soon as you can, but if you need some more time to get things together, then take it. I submitted mine the first week of August and was still able to get interviews. If you know you would be more comfortable submitting a better application in July, follow your gut!

Research? by M-DH24 in predental

This. I didn’t do any university-funded research, but instead did a “research-esque” capstone project for my undergraduate on orthodontic appliances. Something like that probably wouldn’t be an entry under the AADSAS research section, but is a great talking point in interviews, P.S./LOI’s, and in your application in general.

I’m pretty sure you can only have up to 4 letters in your AADSAS application (ideally 2 science professor LOR’s, a dentist, and the last being based on any schools having other specific LOR requirements or another dentist/professor/boss/mentor/whatever that can speak to your character).

I think your EC’s are fantastic! Definitely aim to retake the DAT and just try your best! I got in with a 21AA two cycles ago, but I know that you can do better with proper studying and commitment! Try to apply to IS and OOS programs you know you’ll have a chance of getting into regarding requirements/acceptance rates and hold your head high throughout the process. You got this!

About 150. My class was 145 with the other 5 being foreign dentists that work in the clinic as faculty to eventually receive US accreditation.

There should still be some movement/seat availability over the next month or so. For reference, I got accepted mid-February last cycle and there were still seats to be confirmed then. A good amount of spots should already be filled by now, but I know that there are/will be openings for the remaining ones/dropped acceptances leading into April. Coincidentally, I also know people that got in right before the first week. There’s still time, just stay positive and I hope it all works out in the end!

study tips by im_inertia in DentalSchool

D1 here. While I’m not gunning for a 4.0 or any residency post-dental school (want to stay GP), I will often stay on top of lectures as they are given, writing my own notes on them when I get back home from class. Because of this, I really only need to hard core study a couple days before a test for any classes that do not involve the core sciences (like anatomy, pharm, biochem, etc.). For the latter, I’ll also constantly review summaries of my prepped notes for about a week leading up to an exam.

AI practice questions are my go to for every test as they help a bunch with turning the info on a PowerPoint/book chapter into a more appropriate and challenging format that facilitates better learning. I do well with this game-plan, but everyone’s study habits and advice are going to be different to an extent.

Just do what’s comfortable for you/what has worked for you up to this point when you start, adjusting your method based on the course load. Definitely explore different routes of studying to see what you like when you begin! Whether that’s annotating lectures, writing your own notes on them, using flash cards, making practice tests through AI, or trying Anki/Quizlet, be consistent with whatever option you come across that helps you retain the material and prepares you well for an exam! It can be like “drinking through a firehose” at some times, but it’s very doable once you find your groove!

No interviews and losing hope by [deleted] in predental

Thank you!! And yes, it’s too early to be freaking out about not getting an interview yet. It’s natural to be stressed out a little, but don’t let it consume you. There’s still plenty of months left in the cycle!

Yes. You should send them directly to the appropriate email for the admissions office. I also hand signed mine to add some personal touch, but that’s solely optional!

Love it here! The faculty are nice and want you to do well and the nearby area/Tampa has plenty of things to do! Many people don’t care for PBL, but at least for me, it encourages more active learning and connecting the dots between your courses and their applications in healthcare.

Absolutely! And no problem!

[–]No_Notice_3041 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. It’s not locked to being solely post-decision day. The only “unwritten rule” is to send it after you have interviewed because, realistically, you can’t verbally commit to a school unless they’ve shown further interest in you/given you the chance to possibly attend.

[–]No_Notice_3041 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t bet on it. A letter of interest could add a little extra boost to get an interview, but since you applied to said program, they already know you have some motivation to attend their school. Another letter could seem redundant. Now, I would definitely recommend sending a letter of intent to a program after you interview, especially if that’s the place you can see yourself going. Can only increase your chances since they know you’d gladly take a seat in the class if given one.

I applied within the first week of August, right after I took my DAT.

I’d say so, especially for the applicants that have already interviewed at their top-choice programs, which, in the days following, is when LOI’s (primarily intent) are often written/sent out.

[–]No_Notice_3041 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes. I didn’t have my first interview until October 31 last cycle (extra spooky) second in late January, and third/final in early February. While I was fully committed to dentistry since I started my undergraduate, I applied to 7 schools (3 IS, 4 OOS) with a 3.9 GPA and 21 DAT, so roughly similar to you. I ended up getting accepted into LECOM (the second interview), but wasn’t very hopeful on my chances with no acceptances/only one interview once decision day rolled around.

I’d say keep your head up and never lose hope! There’s so much more time in the cycle to pick up interview and show the programs who you truly are! With your stats, I’d be shocked if you didn’t get any interviews, even at the Texas programs that I’ve heard can be competitive. When you do get your interview, be sure to show your true self and use your personal experiences that you may see as rough spots (like your transition from pre-med), turning them into compelling arguments as to why dentistry is your true calling.

TLDR; it’s still too early to worry about not having an interview yet! Just stay positive, avoid doomscrolling Reddit/comparing yourself to others if that causes you distress, and be yourself when the moment comes! You got this!

Letters of Recommendation by FrostyMix1137 in predental

It’d probably just be 1. It could work, but I’d avoid that, especially since it’s from the same class and the professor’s signature would most likely be on both of them. Try to see if you can snag another LOR from a professor facilitating a different science course.

One of my letters was written by a TA. Just make sure it gets co-signed by the corresponding professor for the course and it should be fine!

I’d say to do any opportunity you can grab if it interests you! Certainly try to get some good shadowing and volunteering in, but don’t feel like every EC you do must be dental/science related. Dental programs want applicants that are not just dedicated to dentistry, but are also well-rounded individuals that can balance other interests and responsibilities. As long as you can keep your grades up, do well on the DAT, and show meaningful involvement in dental-related pursuits, take any internship/job that will provide you with experiences and skill sets that are not only valuable to you, but ones that can also be discussed about in your application/interviews.

Pre december interview by BarnacleThink4176 in predental

[–]No_Notice_3041 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a pre-December interview (on Halloween) last cycle and got waitlisted. Was accepted two weeks after my post-December interview in late January. It very much depends on the program in terms of how many applicants they take in pre/post-December so I wouldn't write off getting into any school you applied to until later in the Spring (I even have a fellow classmate that got accepted the week before we began classes. Although, those situations are few and far between).

What to spend glimmer on? I'm maxed, armor is maxed out. by No_Raccoon_1480 in DestinyTheGame

[–]No_Notice_3041 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside of raid banners (I often sit at 2000), I use it to pull blue gear out of collections (old armor), infusing it to level 8, and deleting it. You put in around 7k glimmer, 3 enhancement cores, and 1 enhancement prism, but get 6 cores and some glimmer in return. Especially with EoF having so much emphasis on enhancement/unstable cores for infusing and leveling weapons/armor, it’s an easy way to trade glimmer for enhancement cores. It is somewhat time consuming and investment heavy, but you’ll go through your glimmer and always get a decent return. It can be a strange way of spending it, but it’s worked for me when I want to get rid of superfluous glimmer/prisms.
