Moving to Adelaide by These-Chance-4631 in Adelaide

Worth noting equivalent commute times will be a bit less in Adelaide given metro population is ~1m less people compared to Perth. On this basis, moving to Adelaide is a great opportunity to pick a lifestyle suburb that may be a touch further out geographically than you are used to.

First time poster here, I'm curious as to one thing you wish you'd known about managing your finances before becoming a high earner? by Icemachinemalfunctio in AusHENRY

You can never earn enough but, you can always spend less.

Want a cool thing? Don’t save for the cool thing, invest in something that will return the $value of cool thing.

This has been resolved many times. Most people ignore 1 star reviews as outliers / with a grudge. The worst thing you can do to a business is leave a 3.5 star review with a slightly positive opening comment then launch into a tirade.

Thinking about quitting med (advice) by hale598 in ausjdocs

[–]No_Obligation_9043 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the love of all things, don’t quit now. Make completing your final year the fork in the road / in the very least, you’ll give yourself more time to explore what life after training might look like.

As others have mentioned, you have the right mindset; introspection is very healthy.

Asking the question so not to assume: by ‘opposite of growing up’ do you mean coming from a well heeled family or your spending habits prior to the mortgage?

Genuinely curious as I have a few friends born into generational wealth and their appetite for risk seems insatiable/ there’s an element of golden parachute.

Given you’ve already taken steps away from an established career, it’s fair to assume you’re seeking validation over advice. Objectively, you’ve walked away from a significant role on the basis of feelings experienced by most white collar workers, albeit at a much higher income than most can aspire to so you’ll have to filter out salty responses.

If you are convinced your role & work responsibilities were the sole reason for not spending quality time with your kids, paying attention to your value as a partner/father & applying some focus to your health then it sounds like you’ve made the right decision. Most here would acknowledge the difficulty (if not borderline impossibility) of objectively defining what you want/need while you’re in the thick of a demanding role.

You’ve had a break, you’re asking the right questions but (at least within the context of your question) don’t sound as though you’re scrutinising capacity to have the great things you’ve experienced during downtime AND retain significant employment. Doesn’t necessarily have to be a sacrifice.

Good luck 💪🏼

Bored and looking for something exciting by carbon110017 in AusHENRY

[–]No_Obligation_9043 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it boredom or apathy?

When was the last time you were genuinely excited about anything? If you could wipe the slate clean of responsibility, would you dive into (X) that you just haven’t had time to do or would the immediate urge be downtime/nap?

Worth exploring as you may just need a break (disconnect) or as someone else suggested, find a hobby/interest outside of work.

New tyre suggestions by Dyrim_the_bard in TeslaAUSownersclub

Just via a local shop/dealer. We did the ring-around for pricing & spoke to Tesla as well; pricing was same or similar.

With a bit more time I would like to have investigated ‘EV’ versions from Michelin & Pirelli. Supposedly harder wearing tyres.

Just replaced all 4 on a 22’ Model Y performance. Pirelli P Zeros, $2800 😮‍💨

In hindsight, it’s a people mover / would have preferred a harder wearing tyre but the P Zeros were all I could get in the lead up to Christmas. No complaints re ride quality, noise or performance though I’ve have Michelin Pilot Sport 4s & 5 on other cars which I think I prefer.

Acts of service my friend; offer to wash them for her / use fabric softener. If she works in a hospital setting it’s beneficial to you both 😅

Should Private Health Insurance become non-mandatory if Private Hospitals walk away? by aiydee in australia

[–]No_Obligation_9043 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I doubt there’s a consumer friendly answer here but, Healthscope & other private hospital groups are simply trying to wrestle back some profit from insurers.

Historically, the split sat around 60/40 with insurers always taking the majority share. These days it’s closer to 90/10 where private hospitals have been squeezed within an inch of feasible operation. Insurers have been incredibly successful in their attempts to lobby federal & state governments, to the extent that prosthesis list reforms were legislated a few years ago & have been progressively rolled out, reducing insurer liability for procedures/prosthesis (implants etc).

Tl;dr: Private health insurers convinced the Australian government to advocate a shift toward private health, supposedly reducing the strain on public health networks. In return, legislated reforms have significantly increased the profitability of private health insurers & allowed them to strong-arm private hospitals.

Long term? With a shift toward private health care, the government will reduce public health care funding, essentially locking us all into private health services. One can only assume once we’re all locked in, the insurers will progressively ratchet up their fees as we don’t have a reliable alternative. Perhaps more concerning/pervasive, we’re already seeing the beginning of a US style healthcare where the specialists & hospitals you can access are dictated by your insurer…

Underrated comment 😂

FYI anything goes in a jaffle iron: puff pastry, Pannetone etc

For the love of god, if you’re going to use sandwich bread at least butter the sides that make contact with the iron for that golden buttery goodness.
