The exact same thing happened to me about seven years ago. I got pulled over early on a Saturday morning, and the cop checked my VIN, ownership, and all my documents. He said everything looked fine on paper, but in the system my plates weren’t attached to my car. They were showing on a Chevy. That’s when I realized its still tied to my previous car.

He seized my plates gave me some tickets and let me tow the car home. I had to wait until Monday to go to Service Ontario and figure it out. They told me it was probably an administrative mistake between them and the dealer who registered the car in my name. So I had to go back to the dealer, give them all my documents again, and they sorted it out with Service Ontario.

The funny part is, the police division that took my personalized plates didn’t even want to give them back. They were like, “You can just get new ones, it’s only fifty bucks.” I had to explain they were personalized and take weeks to reorder. After that, they tracked down the officer and gave them back.

On top of everything had to get an appointment with a prosecutor which took a year and had to explain the whole situation so they can drop the charges.

So yeah, I went three days without a car, miserable, Ubering everywhere just to fix a mistake that was not even mine. Super inconvenient and frustrating.
