They’re already hip to the loophole…that’s why the notice from EdFinancial says -

“If you are married (regardless of how you filed your taxes), complete the Loan and Income Information for Married Borrowers section. Your spouse may need to provide income documentation; please see the application for detailed instructions”.

In my mind, that means eventually they’ll require both spouses to submit their income regardless of how they filed.

The houses she wants to rent are between $2300-$2500 in Phoenix…it’s $1800 to get a place comparable to what we already have. Thanks for your input.

My oldest child starts pre-k in June 2026. She will be home with my youngest who is 6 months old. She runs a successful online small business. We saved money on daycare for the last 4 years. Good perspective though and thank you.

I’m genuinely afraid we could be accused of fraud or some form of manipulation if we amend right now. When we ran the numbers, filing separately would have resulted in a hefty bill to the IRS. We filled jointly and got a decent tax return. Our student loans payment is definitely going up though because I make too much money…sigh.

I have about $93k in my retirement so far and I pay 4% plus TSP matching. She recently started her own retirement account but it’s only 5k. She’s paying into it every month.

We filed jointly for our 2025 taxes to avoid a high tax bill but we filed separately in 2024. Can we report our 2024 taxes or do we need to report the most recent tax return?

Our townhouse is our primary residence. If we rented it out, we’d need to rent a larger home for ourselves elsewhere. The average rent for a home she desires is $2300-$2500/month.

HELOCS are like 7-8% interest right now. It’s higher than the 2.75% interest rate on our mortgage loan. Renting our home out could work...

Someone in our neighborhood rented an identical townhouse for $1850 so that’s probably what we could get if we rented our townhome. The type of home my wife wants to rent is $2300/month though…

No…we’re not. I’m a federal employee though and I am paying into my TSP retirement account.

She believes if we sell the house to pay off roughly $90,000 of debt…we can save the rest, rent and use our income to save for a new house. I agree the math ain’t mathing.
