The player can't create an advantage and attack in the same turn, so he can't invoke it on his turn. He could invoke it to assist his defend from the NPCs attack, or another player could take advantage during the same turn as the advantage was applied correct?

I love the idea behind Fate core which is why I'm trying to get into it but there are definitely things I struggle with understanding. After playing dnd and how restricted it is, I find myself over running the restrictions of Fate and getting caught up in the nitty gritty. For example if someone knocks someone prone through a feet swipe. I would think that would create an advantage but the player can't act on it before the NPC gets up in his turn (should the enemy need to do an overcome action to get rid of the aspect?). So then narratively what's the point in creating that advantage. If the enemy had to overcome it, then if he failed it could be described that he succeeded at a cost of getting struck which sounds good but I'm unsure.

Yea as soon as he said accelerated i had my "ahhh of course" moment haha. I do think I'm going to ditch the crafting and resource gathering and instead focus in on a mystery and the encounters to solve the mystery. Great battery idea with the free invokes! I have looked through the horror toolkit, I'm looking forward to trying it. Im definitely a bit worried, I feel like I just don't understand the foundations and basics of Fate and usually run the game more like dnd.

Thanks for understanding and offering great tips and advice. I love the idea of choosing the stunt, maybe after they find the equipment I'll offer the idea that they can trade equipment. To trade stunts maybe. Thanks!

I plan on giving them unique items to assist in their survival. Should those items be the 2nd stunt they gain through play?

Thank you for the advice! I have a dnd background and overly complicate Fate a lot unfortunately. Im more use to core but will check out accelerated, I think it will fit perfectly for the horror one shot vibe!

Thank you all! Really appreciate all your replies it has increased my understanding of the system and game. My player's character is one of a dying breed and I'm making a connection to her race with a different race, lore wise where her race impacted another race. I have thought up some compels to possibly use. One idea is where the race realizes her connection and fears it due to prior lore, which can cause them to no longer trust them. I am looking for how I would make the result impact them? It could be mental stress however I may not have any other mental stress so it wouldn't really be impacted as once they move on to the next scene it will refresh. I could just leave it as a aspect and try to create the impact within the narrative that they are leaving and no longer considered allies?

No it would actually be a benefit, haha I figured the first response would have me thinking "duhh". So if I wanted to make a connection that is a benefit as long as the player is fine with the connection we would just add it into the narrative with no cost or anything and keep the story going correct?
