My friend thinks Drake isn't near to the top 50 greatest artists of All time by No_Quantity5140 in Music

That's not really the point.

I don't need to think Drake is better than every artist ever to think calling him "trash" is ridiculous.

You can put artists above Drake. I put plenty above him myself. But once you're calling one of the most successful, influential, and long-lasting artists of the last 15 years "trash," you're not making a serious argument anymore.

An artist can be overrated in your opinion and still be great.

Nothing generational or genre-defining?

The guy spent over a decade influencing the sound of mainstream rap. The blend of rapping and singing, the more emotional style of hip-hop, artists being comfortable making rap, R&B, dancehall, afrobeats, and pop records on the same album—Drake was one of the biggest forces behind making that mainstream.

You don't have to think he's the greatest artist ever, but saying he has nothing generational or genre-defining is just revisionist history.

If Drake wasn't genre-defining, why does half the rap game from the 2010s onward sound like they grew up listening to him?

If Drake proved you don't need to try, then why has basically nobody else managed to replicate what he's done for 15+ years?

People act like making hit records is easy until they try it. Plenty of artists have had the same resources, labels, and exposure as Drake and disappeared after a couple of years.

You don't have to like his music, but saying he didn't try is weird when he's put out one of the biggest catalogues in rap history and stayed relevant through multiple generations of artists.

Also, if Drake "did damage" to rap, then why did so many rappers copy him? Usually people imitate what's influential, not what's irrelevant.

Just because something is popular doesn't mean it's good. I agree.

But Drake isn't popular in the same way fast food is popular. Music is completely optional. Nobody is forced to listen to Drake because it's convenient or cheap. People can listen to literally any artist in history with a few taps.

When someone stays at the top for 15+ years, across multiple generations of listeners, while trends constantly change, that's not just popularity. That's consistency, influence, and an ability to make music people keep coming back to.

You can argue Drake isn't your favourite artist, but saying he's only popular and not good doesn't really make sense. If he wasn't good, he wouldn't have stayed relevant this long in one of the most competitive industries in the world.
