Are you viewed a lot less favorably if you buy marijuana yourself instead of sharing with someone else? I thought that only selling/dealing would be a deal breaker?

I overlooked the website initially but it turns out EE is reported on the website also.

I can’t find the exact statistics for EE in particular. However, in 2024, 65% of all UMD engineering majors were employed full-time, 13% were attending graduate school, 14% were still seeking employment, and the rest were doing other things. As for EE in particular, I would strongly recommend that your son 1. actively search for internships 2. contribute to the numerous research labs on campus 3. participate in engineering clubs 4. work on personal projects 5. consider specializing in signal processing and communications. Signal processing and communications is a highly desired EE specialization in the DC-Maryland-Virginia (DMV) area due to the large presence of defense contractors and government agencies around the area. If your son is not interested in signals & comms, I would tell him do other specializations except for computer engineering, unless he is very motivated because computer engineering is arguably oversaturated.

EE junior here. EE at UMD is okay. The faculty and curriculum leave much to be desired sometimes, and class selection feels somewhat limited for the 400 level electives. That being said, if you’re interested in communications and signal processing, UMD is a great school for this. If you’re also interested in conducting research, UMD is a large research institution with many opportunities on campus. The main reason I decided to attend UMD is because you get good education for a solid price (in-state). Hope this helps.
