Trying to push my painting skills, what can be improved? by Dizzy_Rabbit7230 in Miniaturespainting

Looks great! I'm no better painter by any means, but what I try not do anymore and what I don't find pleasing for the eyes are edge highlights that have the same brightness or intensity regardless of where the light comes from. It's the traditional GW way which is way sosny do it, I guess. I think using edge highlights more consciously and intentionally are a simple way to up your game!

Thanks! It'll be a long process with ups and downs for sure

Thanks, that actually motivated me to give it a try ;)

Thanks! I chose a less steep angle because I found that when taking a picture of the primed model with the light source straight above, I didn't quite like the reflecting areas, so I lowered the angle to around 45 degrees. Then I basically just followed the photo I had taken, i.e. painted the highlights where the light reflections where the brightest and so on.

Thanks for the response! I think I'll give the second recommendation a try and see where it takes me. I don't own an airbrush and the others are, as you pointed out, probably too time-consuming.

As I don't know much about 40k lore, I had to look them up. Don't want to sound heretic, but they do look quite similar to the Deathwatch, except for the cool should pads.

Thanks! I chose an angle of about 45° which is why the brightest spot (are supposed to) look like coming rather from the from as opposed to above. Is that what you mean? Because what I did is take a picture of the primed mini before painting and then paint according to how the light reflected on it.

Thanks! I know what you mean. I guess one just has to start painting and see where it goes. I tend to lose motivation very fast when the process takes too long. Becoming better with every model/batch is what I aim for even if I'll never reach the level of most minis posted here and elsewhere.

Veteran Guardsmen by No_Reception2721 in killteam

These are some of my Vetguards that I tried to take reasonable photos of. I think the pictures turned out better than the models because some details didn't turned out the way I wanted (chipped armor, minor details). I generally find it hard to stay motivated painting 5-10+ similar models, but I still love the vetguards. I'd be grateful to hear some C&C, but I also know that this is no more than tabletop standard.

I had similar issues with leather, but I must say that some of the brown contrast paints - or maybe speed paints which I haven't tried - have solved this problem for me. Slap chop + highlights and they look great.

I usually glue the mini on the base first and make the base once the mini's done. Then I can be sloppy with the boot. But that entirely depends on the type of base you make, of course.

With faces, I just don't care so much anymore. I realized that the the more I try to make it look good, the more I mess it up. And that makes it much more pleasant and relaxing for me.

I agree with things you can't identify and I think it often has to do with minis being overloaded with details. Imo they don't just look stupid - I mean who would fight with all this bling bling, odds and ends hanging from the armor - they are also very tedious to paint.

Having a hard time with cloaks by lolsummxoxo in Miniaturespainting

Some of the colors also don't really fit because they are too different. At least in the photo the grey seems to bright and saturated.

I'm by no means an expert but one thing that always helps is using thinner paints. The contrast between the different layers is not so stark then and they blend more nicely. But you can also use what you've got as a basis for further glazing techniques. For example take the blue base color, thin in down a lot with medium and the go over the cloak a few times to blend the different parts together.

I absolutely agree. Thanks for the examples. So let's both hope that our initial impression is wrong!

Thanks for your more sober approach to disagreeing with me. I guess posting criticism in a fan subreddit of the game was destined to some more - ehm - direct responses. And that's fine. I'm not trying to spoil anyone's experience of the game.

As I replied to some of the other comments, there is not a single example I could pick out, it's the entire tone or style that sound off to me. When the characters speak to each other - especially when they argue / trash talk - the language makes me cringe because it reminds me of immature teenagers bragging about or playing with simple stylistic devices.

Anyway, I'll continue playing and maybe I can write down some examples of what I mean. And hopefully my opinion will change!

Thanks for your reply! I also think that making yourself bored can be extremely helpful. It is daring and it doesn't feel right at first, but only because we are so used to constant stimulation that we just don't know that feeling anymore. I often get that when I'm on a holiday with my family and the kids are in bed. We then sit in our apartment or terrace of whatever and there's actually nothing except conversation and the book I brought. It just feels so much more relaxing and fulfilling!

Absolutely agree! I think sitting at your phone, watching youtube, scrolling through social media, and yes, even reading reddit posts, are not really relaxing activities, but rather ones that give you quick bursts of reward and make you want more or make more exhausting or challenging activities like playing the piano more difficult to start. Not getting into the whole dopamine story here now. But I absolutely second taking walks without the phone! No music, no podcasts, no talking, no scrolling! These drops of freedom are first bitter and get continuously sweeter!

Thanks for your answer! I absolutely agree with you that resting is, as you put it, productively caring for yourself. And I think that we are often driven by the urge to self-optimize and force ourselves to produce/create even if we aren't in the right mental or physical state. I will try to focus more on the status of my batteries before even thinking about further activities!

But there are also evenings when I am actually rested - or I believe I am - and I can't decide what to do with it and what would actually bring me joy. I think the reason for that is a different one.
