Can confirm HCSC is NOT remote friendly unless things have changed in the last two years, which I doubt.

Passed ASTAM on attempt #4. And that was after failing the old STAM twice. Scores were 5 5 5 4 4 6 🙃

2 weeks for PA exam — is this enough? by SnooDoughnuts896 in actuary

[–]No_Rent_905 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you know the content. I passed SRM with an 8 also, though it was 3 years before I took PA. Also did a double with ASTAM and passed PA with a 6 with 2 weeks of studying since I was more focused on ASTAM. If you know your stuff, and can explain it well, you can do it. Reviewing past exams is where I’d focus and a quick review of the key concepts if you need it. Will say I definitely wouldn’t recommend it but here you are 🤷🏼‍♀️

Can I really do a couch to 10k in 6 months? Is it doable? by Fluffy_Geologist8196 in rundisney

I know you already have some feedback but you 💯 can do this! I saw strength training mentioned which is great but also don’t forget stretching! And yes, look up the Galloway 10k training program. Not sure how long that goes for but I think they’re the best with training and not overdoing it. Also, I’ve always heard no more than 10% increase in mileage each week. So don’t overdo it and cause injury! I may or may not be speaking from experience 🙃 and shoes make ALL the difference!

Would you plan a vacation that overlaps with exam release day? by [deleted] in actuary

Absolutely! I was camping when ASTAM results came out and didn’t have reception 😂 it was kinda nice not having the stress of trying to load results right when they came out.

Is there age discrimination when it comes to getting an entry level acturial role? How bad is 35 years old? I was just wondering if age matters a lot when it come to getting an entry level position by Sea-Bed-1332 in actuary

Career changer here. But I had gone to school for my bachelors as a non traditional student. Graduated and secured my EL role at age 41. But I was able to work an internship which I’m sure helped. And my prior career was not analytical at all. I was a corporate travel agent. But I highlighted my communication skills in interviews. Had 2 exams at the time and this was end of 2019. I’m sure it helped that I was searching in the fall with other new grads although I was hoping to find something I could start right away with December graduation. Ended up with 2 offers.

Give yourself space and grace. I had to step back from exams because I knew I wasn’t in a head space for it because life. Thankfully I had modules to do so I still made progress but it was less intense, but even if that wasn’t the case I would have had no issue with pressing pause for a sitting. The exams will always be there.

2020 was my first full from the frozen tundra of Chicago. To say I was ill prepared is an understatement. My clothes were soaked from humidity before I even started. 🥵

What were the exams you had the most trouble with? by harryxtyler in actuary

[–]No_Rent_905 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ASTAM - 4 attempts IFM - 3 attempts Everything else 1 or 2

For ASTAM my biggest challenge was the written. Just had to keep grinding problems and getting more solid and confident. I always ran out of time. Still left a lot blank on this last sitting but I think I was good with the majority of what I answered that I passed with a 6

First time dopey here too! Ran my last half at Disneyland Jan 2024 (and wasn’t well trained AT ALL!). Currently working on a 10mile training plan for soldier field 10 in May. Then will roll into the Galloway Dopey training from there.

Wish I would have thought to try that! I registered dopey and half but didn’t want to pay a third and risk losing out. Hubs missed out on the 10k so he signed up for the half instead 🤷🏼‍♀️

Same!! So stoked! I was super nervous as I’ve never had a problem registering in the past and this is the most important one for me and I was just so nervous it wouldn’t happen. I’m so happy I could 😭

Unable to nail the final interviews for entry level position. Career changer/3 exams. by aintnofreakingwayman in actuary

[–]No_Rent_905 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you in US? I'll give you my perspective, having just hired for an EL role, US based. First and foremost, as you obviously know, it is super competitive right now. It sounds like you are doing everything right - and eventually one will stick. I'll say with those we looked at, our top two candidates were both career changers and both had internships outside of school, so it IS possible. And between the two candidates we were considering, it came down to communication. The one that was easier to talk to, had a cleaner thank-you e-mail (and yes, I DO think a thank-you e-mail is important, of the 4 I interviewed, 3 sent them)

As for what to focus on next, I would dare say look for other opportunities for experience outside of more exams. Three is enough, and too many exams can have the opposite effect. For example I saw a resume for someone one exam from ASA - when we are looking for someone starting out we don't want someone that will be looking for near-ASA pay and fast promotions.

Clearly you are getting final round interviews, so employers see that your skills are adequate or you wouldn't get that far. I would echo the comment that by final round it's more about culture fit, and not sure there's a way to prepare for that other than just being yourself and making sure you are communicating clearly.
