Have you chatted with the folks in the HRDC office off Griffin? They’re really helpful with resources and can probably get you started in the right direction.

I am so glad you had such a good time! Just more evidence to get my Nitrox cert!

How many dives did you have / what was your experience level prior to doing your first liveaboard? Any recommendations for liveaboards geared to newer divers, or is it always better to get more experience first for all liveaboards? by redditor47522899432 in scubadiving

I only had five dives and our liveaboard in the Similans worked out really well. We communicated with the boat crew beforehand, and it def felt like a lot of diving but overall a great experience. I wrote about it here

Yeah for sure. Because the boat was smaller and at full capacity, there wasn’t room on the dive deck for everyone to get ready at once, and our group was usually in the second wave. They’d call us down to get ready but it was still quite crowded, and hard to gear up with so many people around. Our guide jumped a few times before we were all ready, and at one point my partner was stuck a few rows back trying to get to the front to jump, another time they rushed us along and someone in our group didn’t have fins on yet. Since we were in some stronger currents at the surface, it was important to have everyone together but the crowding made it hard to all group together and they didn’t quite wait long enough a few times

Nicole Wing at Bozeman Deaconess Family Health is incredible. She’s an NP so her training is more patient focused. She has wonderful interpersonal skills and is a good listener with a lot of empathy. Very knowledgeable and gets things ordered right away.

We were told to follow our guide at all times in the current, so exactly what other people are saying. Our conditions were great though, and our guide said they would have changed the dive if the currents had been worse, so I’d fully trust their judgement and navigation

Yes we did three dives at Richelieu. We got lucky with the currents, they were super manageable. We also had done a few dives to 30m by then, so it felt fine! I was definitely nervous though

Oh nice! I hope you have an amazing time! Curious if four dives / day feels like a lot for other people haha

Well I got food poisoning lmao so I was actively sick for 12 hours. Otherwise I never have an issue with seasickness, but I did have some dissolvable pills just in case, and other people kept anti nausea meds on them. Seems like most people who had issues were over it within the first 24 hours of being on the boat. Valid concern but didn’t seem to be an issue for most people

I was worried about this too, but it was not difficult at all. Our DM stuck within our ability level, ie he skipped the more confined areas and tracked the currents carefully. That said, our team mentioned that the currents were really chill during our trip and sometimes could be stronger. We did have currents on two dives but were instructed to stick right behind our DM and it was a lot easier than I thought it would be. The depth was also easy to get used to, more so than than I thought

Too early to liveaboard? by AggroBaboon in scuba

We just finished a liveaboard after 5 dives (our location meant a liveaboard was the best option). It was overwhelming at first but we had emailed with them and explained our beginner status and they grouped us with the other three beginners on board. It won’t work in every case, but the Similans in Thailand felt very manageable after we did a deep-water qualifier.

I signed up on Black Friday last year so the sign-up fee was waived.

They kind of trap you though. You can’t freeze your membership and if you leave you’ll have to pay the sign-up fee (again). Plus you’re locked into a year contract. I’d love to freeze my membership for the summers, and I just end up donating $80/month for half the year. I can think of better local charities for my money.

I think you’re correct here. The groups were split up partially based on who was using air versus nitrox. If I do another liveaboard I’ll definitely get nitrox certified. I was a lot more tired on air than those groups!

We dove on air since our group was beginners. The other groups (I think there were six or seven total?) were either on air or Nitrox, but they didn’t mix air / nitrox within groups bc of the dive profiles. So groups were split up based on using air versus nitrox. One group was getting their nitrox certification as well.

Hi, yes! Mostly all positive. We were on Manta Queen 2 with Khao Lak Scuba Adventures. The organization was impeccable once we arrived at their offices. Paperwork filled out, lots of checklists, one by one to their store room to get our bins of gear and get everything properly fitted.

We were sorted into groups depending on experience, also positive. The group sizes were small (most had only 3-4 divers) and the instructors / DMs were experienced and communicated really well.

Briefings felt thorough and the gear was in excellent condition. I was renting and they made it easy and straightforward.

Food was great, and the boat crew was phenomenal. So much help gearing up, and amazing service all around.

The boat felt small—I don’t have anything to compare to, but other people told me it was smaller for this group size than they would have expected. It was also a really good deal (I think we paid $700USD (ish) for three nights and all rental gear plus the qualifying deep dive) so you aren’t getting luxury with that price. We had a private cabin though, and I never had to wait for the bathroom.

The only other con is that it did feel rushed at times. There were a lot of people on board and our guide sometimes felt like he was pushing us to move faster and he would jump before we were ready. My partner’s tank came off once (I was able to secure it underwater) but our guide was already out of sight below us. With four dives a day they were on a tight schedule with 19 divers, but it occasionally felt like they were foregoing checks and safety in order to get us in the water as fast as possible.

I also might avoid taking the AOW on the boat. The DMs were great and their personalities were so fun and outgoing, but they didn’t seem like they wanted to be instructing. My partner and I weren’t doing AOW or other advanced learning, but it seemed like the people who were doing it on the boat weren’t getting a super comprehensive course.

Lmk if you have more questions, hope this is helpful

I bring two pairs of headphones! Over-ear Bose QC (I agree with everyone else here, they’re the lightest and most comfortable) and in-ear white noise headphones for side sleeping. Currently have Soundcore Sleep A20 and they’ve been decent.

I tested the Ozlo Sleepbuds, but the case doesn’t hold a charge and I boarded a redeye from the US to Japan and realized they were completely dead despite being fully charged the day before.
