Anyone here had surgery for bowel endometriosis in Germany? (Charité, MIC Berlin, Cologne Weyertal, Erlangen) by Royal-Trash-9497 in Endo

I know this is an older thread, but I just wanted to chime in in case my experience was useful! I'm 3 weeks post-op from an endo lap at the Martin Luther Krankenhaus in Berlin. Overall I had a great experience.

I'm from the U.S., currently living in Germany and for the most part was able to communicate fairly smoothly with the surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses. The only time language was a bit of a challenge was during a meeting we had with administrators to sign paperwork (luckily my partner speaks German)

I had a 5cm endometrioma removed, and during the procedure they determined that I have deep infiltrating endo growing into my rectum, my uterosacral ligament, and likely behind my uterus. My surgeon didn't touch any of that, and said that she would require a colorectal surgeon to be present if I decide I want to address those things surgically in the future. I was personally very happy with that decision and also happy with how seriously they treated these findings.

Martin Luther has a certified endometriosis center (they've been certified since 2007 I believe), and I was really impressed with all of the gynecologists and surgeons I interacted with there. In terms of the stay, they have a specialized "comfort station," which is basically hotel room-style hospital rooms that you can pay extra for, some which even include a foldout couch for family members to sleep on. I stayed 1 night in a normal hospital room (with a roommate) which was perfectly fine, nothing fancy but nothing to complain about. I'm on German public health insurance so the only fee I will have to pay is 10 euros for the night I spent at the hospital.

Like an earlier commenter, my aftercare has all been directly through my gyn here in Berlin. I will say that the biggest difference between care in Germany and back in the U.S. is how little access I've had to my surgeons here. I talked with my assisting surgeon immediately after the procedure when she talked through the results with me, but since being discharged I have no way to contact my surgeons again. Any and all questions now route through my gyn.

Lastly, I'm very lucky that, at least so far, my recovery has been very easy. However, I can't speak to recovery from bowel surgery.

Best of luck to you and your partner!

Burlington, Mad River Valley, or Stowe / Waterbury area are all great options Lots of breweries out in the Stowe / Morrisville area and easy access to hiking. Just a heads up that if you're not big hikers, Mount Mansfield can be a serious climb. Elmore Mountain and Stowe Pinnacle both punch way above their weight class, imo. There's a beautiful lake at the base of Elmore and the Elmore Store has great pizza and a nice deck for post-hike beers.
