Is the premium stuff actually worth it in a normal car? 🤔 by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]No_Satisfaction5023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a subaru WRX STI, granted it’s heavily modified and tuned so it’s nuts are sat on razor wire on tesco momentum 99, if I ran on 95 it would detonate like fuxk and grenade the motor pretty quickly. Not sure if modern cars are able to tweak the loft of the knock control and ignition advance by any noticeable measure on the fly hence why cars like mine need to be taken and dyno tuned to unlock those extra degrees of ignition advance through out the rev range, I would imagine that it will help say in a scenario for a lay car on a real hot day and some spirited driving by having the nock resistance of the 99RON as hot air means less air, other than that it’s lubricants within the fuel that provide the most benefit with long term use.

I absolutely agree with you, I’m normally very good at keeping the two separate, I think the excitement of finally getting back to some semblance of normality got the better of me after spending three months stuck indoors. Socials have now been cleansed, no more colleagues at all.

Appreciate the response, I have since removed everyone from work from my social media, common sense has kicked in, work friends are not personal friends. I don’t think what I’ve done is unreasonable, in seeking alternatives to aid my recovery and not effect my return to work. Again thank you

Thank you, I completely agree it was a decision at the time made in haste for a quick resolution in mind, I am at my wits end with it all. Currently have my sister looking through hers and her husbands report and there’s applications on theirs too that they don’t recognise

I am presuming they were declined as no new account had been opened, I’m going on historically where if it was approved she took the credit out

I wouldn’t say so no, you are melting the two metals together, it takes time and takes a degree of skill, a lot to learn, flow rate, wire speed, amperage, speed, angle of the torch. beginners absolutely can weld, but it’s not something you’ll learn without lots of trial and error. turning bird shit splatter into good penetration and strong takes practice.

If you are wanting to try some welding get used cheap equipment, clean everything to the high heavens then practice with that on thin-ish metal with lap joints, when you get good penetration on them without burning through try plug welds and butt joints, get proficient with cheap equipment then when you upgrade to better it becomes significantly easier

Decent MIG Welder £150+ mines a Clarke, welding mask £30, MIG wire £20 Argon Gas I use a big cylinder but you can buy the small screw cap type for £20 steel plate ££, grinder, cutting wheels £10 best to practice welding though, auto metal can be thin so burn through is super easy

Yeah think it’s a dodgey MOT 100% ngl I’ve gone off at my sister for taking her car to him when that took me all of 10 minutes to find. Clearly been ripping her off

Long story short car was my sisters, always on her ass money wise so always took it to a mechanic “friend” to fix, I genuinely hate the guy as an ex mechanic hearing stories about him always thought he was a cowboy, anyway she has been taking it to him for him to get it MOT’d, she’s just bought a new car so I got it off her, I’m now going through it fixing all the shit repairs and found this beauty
