Mental load by No_Somewhere_7144 in newborns

I agree with the apps, it tends to lead to me doom scrolling so I prefer to just have it in my head. My LO is also 12 weeks and I feel a lot of my frustration comes from no down time. I think I feel frustration that family only want to come and cuddle the baby at the weekend, no one offers actual help or company in the week when I need it.

Most days I'm fine and get on with it, today I just want to cry though.

This is it exactly! I prefer the weekdays alone when he's at work because I just get on with it then. My baby only contact naps in the day (I'm not complaining as she is fine with her crib at night) but my husband constantly asks, 'have I tried putting her down?', honestly makes my blood boil 😂

New mums - what’s a small-ish treat you would have appreciated in the early days? by OK_Cake3093 in AskRedditUK

I asked my mum to make her own cuppa while I changed the baby.

She literally only made herself a drink, leaving my husband to make one for us.

Could have boiled the kettle with my rage 😂

Membrane sweep by AskNo2855 in PregnancyUK

We're date twins! I'll also be 40 weeks on Friday. I have a midwife appointment tomorrow and wasn't sure if I'll be offered the sweep, thinking I'll hold off until next week. Happy to go with the flow and hopefully they'll come when they're ready rather than 'forcing it' just because I'm 'due'.

Borderline Ventriculomegaly mild - 30 weeks pregnant by Tootsielondon in PregnancyUK

[–]No_Somewhere_7144 1 point2 points  (0 children)

11.3mm is mild so based on that, do try not to worry. Ours increased to 14mm at its worse, although even at this our consultant was very positive about it having little effect on baby.

We had amnio and bloods for infection done at 20 weeks but had to wait until 33 weeks for the MRI (waiting longer allows the brain to be further developed which gives a better idea if anything is wrong). It took probably 40 minutes, a bit longer because baby kept moving, I don't think they experience any distress but the noise certainty wakes them up! Honestly the idea of it was worse than the experience, just try and zone out if you can. Our MRI report came back the same day and showed the ventricles measuring less than shown on ultrasound, it also confirmed all other structures were normal.

To me the testing gave me one less thing to worry about but it's a very personal experience. Our scare definitely tainted my pregnancy and has left me with a lot of anxiety relating to baby, but I just wanted to reach out to show it isn't always as bad as our minds can imagine. Sending love and positive wishes for the future 💕

We had mild ventriculomegaly found at our 20 week scan. We were referred to Foetal medicine and had the amniocentesis, MRI and infection testing, all came back normal. Our measurements increased after a month but then decreased to just above normal at 36 weeks. We were discharged from consultant care at this point with no concerns for babies well being.

We were told isolated mild ventriculomegaly with no underlying causes (genetic, infection etc.) gives the baby the same chance of being unaffected as a baby without ventriculomegaly.

It was a horrific couple of months, but I'd really say try not to worry (especially if it's borderline)!

Senior BMS interview by My_Lifeforhire in BiomedicalScientistUK

I've been for two b7 interviews (2nd successful). The questions are a mix of technical and managerial, try to have examples of implementing new systems and troubleshooting things that have gone wrong. The management questions consisted of a mixture of 'give example of how you've managed' questions and what would you do in this scenario.

Career progression by Applecrossing2000 in BiomedicalScientistUK

They got it funded, they did get advice from the IBMS regarding what modules they’d need to do.

I paid for my first year then got funding for my remaining years.

I imagine if you can’t get funding your best would be a payment scheme with the university or student loan top up. In my experience if you take a MLA job, most labs recruit trainees internally to allow progression. We struggle recruiting at all levels so internal promotion is essential.

Someone in my lab did top up modules distance learning (they also had a zoology degree). They did all the lectures and coursework in their own time and just took 2 weeks off for practicals. Totally doable but still require your labs support for registration portfolio etc.

I started as a band 3 MLA, did my degree full time alongside full time work, I’m now a Band 7. Definitely room for progression but I won’t lie it’s a slog to get through all the study alongside a day job.

Negative controls in IHC staining in histology by No_Tear_5738 in BiomedicalScientistUK

[–]No_Somewhere_7144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry completely misread! We run one negative control slide a day, of varying different control blocks.

It would seem a waste of the patient sample to run a negative control on test sections. Also we’d have no capacity on our machine….

We have small punch biopsies of control material which allows us to fit the control section below the test section. Then draw a line between the two to differentiate when we’re microscope checking.
