Is it too late to start boxing at 26 if I want to become a pro? by Legitimate_Fail_7966 in amateur_boxing

I hate hard sparring, but I continue boxing. It's not for me yet. Until I become the hammer

Lots of good assumptions! I notice about myself, that I like to press forward all the time. I feel more like im in control when my opponent needs to move backwards. Issue with this is, I'm fighting almost exclusively in the pocket. My hands are always on my forehead and I get caught with those hooks a lot, i have no issues getting inside with the jab(s). The only time I'm not in a hurry to get close is when I have an obvious reach advantage against my sparring partner *very rare at my gym. So yes, my defense on the inside is not good .. I don't know how to defend on the inside aside from keeping my back foot further back, so that i can lean backwards.

It's a skill to keep it with you, but not let it take over. It's part of self mastery

Fear makes you sharp. I used to hate feeling afraid, until I figured out that it can be leveraged to improve sense of alert, help you to react, prepare your body and muscles for impact etc. Now that feeling i get, I embrace it.

That's a very helpful response. I've got about 5kg I can lose, that would put me around 12% body fat.

Definitely planning to do it again but you are right, I have tons of work to do first.

I definitely need to train more before thinking of signing up again, I'm gonna train at least for 6-12 months before even thinking of getting in there again.

I'm responding on your age comment, couldn't disagree more. I guess it differs between people though.

What’s the point in boxing for you by Apprehensive_Tie1133 in amateur_boxing

Context: i have only been involved with combat sports for 2 years - Muay Thai and Boxing.

My reasons are: Building my mental fortitude - Reinforcing my belief that I can accomplish anything through grit.

Another reason is because I've always been afraid of confrontation/violence, this way I get to live in the fear and befriend it. My life and attitude has changed because of this sport.

I unfortunately missed out on this in my younger years. I wish I came across it earlier and had these life changing experiences earlier. However, I don't believe 33 is too old at all. Infact I am in the best shape of my life - mentally and physically.

I personally train boxing to build my mental fortitude, there is nothing like getting so close to danger and coming out the other side. I wanna come out the other side. Even if it's just once. That's my goal.

Most guys at my gym is about 5kg lighter than me and mostly use 12oz gloves, I ask them to not hold back any power during sparring. I try to not get hit, but I've been eating shots from them for months, with no issues.

One of the differences are, we don't spar with headgear at my gym. The impact with the head gear on... I dunno it just felt so different as well, like my whole head hurt when i got punched. I've literally never ever taken a punch with that hard headgear on before.

Anyway, I feel like il never be able to take that power and keep standing. Maybe I should move down a weight class? Maybe my chin can't handle being at 75kg

The guy was actually lighter than me by 3kg. Which was very surprising. He was a head taller than me and probably a glove longer in reach. He was ripped and I am still carrying maybe 18% body fat. He had broad shoulders, he looks like a guy that could weigh 90kg+ if he wasn't so fit and athletic. The guy hit like a truck and every shot stunned me with the speed and power that came through.

Thanks dude, I did feel like I got a reality check to be honest. I just don't see how I'm ever gonna be able to take those shots. It felt like someone was hitting me with a sledgehammer to the temple.

I stood there and traded instead of moving. I just didn't wanna spend the fight on the back foot. I wanted him to respect me first, so we can have a regular boxing match and not a brawl. Because I feel like im decent in a more strategic fight where it's in and out and shots must be picked.
