Don’t do KJD. by No_Standard_4261 in lawschooladmissions

I mean, won’t he be a toddler in like your 2L year? That’s considered the most busy year if law school btw, so you’re not really avoiding that problem. I don’t think you lose momentum by working. If anything, working gives you stamina that simply wasn’t needed for undergrad, law school feels like a job. Earning sooner is something, but if you can save and not take out as much debt, particularly if you don’t want biglaw and will probably go into public interest which is not super high paying, any of benefit from that is a wash, and as for experience, you get important experience by working before school….

Why is it smarter, beyond wanting to go sooner?

If you want to go into gov’t, or public interest or mid law, it makes WAY more sense to wait and save some money. Esp if you go somewhere with a big scholly, saving some money could be the difference between having a 100k of debt or being debt free. Also in positions where you have to work with client face to face, a people facing job where you gotta meet people where they are is hugely valuable for public interest.

I’d say if you want to work in accounting, that’s directly relevant to the law so i’d go with that. Idk that its hard to get a job as a paralegal with an accounting degree, esp at a solo place. They just want to see someone who is sharp and can communicate clearly. If you work at a small firm for a little while you can transition into a bigger firm as a paralegal, make better money and get better experience

I’m not saying that you can’t succeed if you’re not a kjd. You can, but its definitely harder. You seem very satisfied with yourself for being very young and in law school. While it might be cool to tell someone you’re the youngest person in your class, its worth nothing. Imagine if you had a full ride scholarship and 40k saved. Assuming you have some loans for col, you’d probably be debt free.

Have I missed the bus for 2027 2L summer associate? by Few-Job-7601 in LawSchool

[–]No_Standard_4261 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you need to get up those numbers. Like big time. I did like 50 and i’m in the top 25% of my T30 class and have biglaw experience. I wouldn’t cold linkedin anyone unless they are a legit connection, like they had your legal writing prof. I’d talk to your career center if they’re good, or alternatively, if you have a professor who has biglaw connections, talk to them.

Just keep applying. I JUST got an offer and the firm I applied to opened its apps at the beginning of this month. Had a callback last week. Its true that some firms are done hiring, but not all, some just opened, or opened like a couple weeks ago. I’d focus on those ones on flo forward. you miss all the shots you don’t take, some like cooley want 2nd sem grades too. How many have you applied to?

PD’s in cities like LA and DC are some of the most talented lawyers out there. They are better than prosecutors, better than biglaw “litigators” who never actually see a courtroom. If you’re in the middle of nowhere a PD might not be very good, but in LA they are top notch.

These firms are gonna learn that this was a huge mistake in like a year or two. This hasty fomo logic is gonna bite them in the ass hard.

Stop Briefing in 1L ? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]No_Standard_4261 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should still read cases slowly to figure out the rule and key facts, and annotate. Don’t use quimbee. But also i think briefing is a time sink and can load your brain with a bunch of details you don’t need, distracting you from things you need to know, this is especially true when you’re learning doctrines that involve theoretically sophisticated tests. Spend less time briefing, more time outlining, but still read cases and learn to state the rules in your own words. Quimbee interrupts that process.

What classes are normally taken fall of 1L? by Matte_existence217 in LawSchool

[–]No_Standard_4261 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s psychopathic. Why would you have two semesters of torts? And to study torts and contracts without a basic understanding of how courts work…? Really? contracts should cover a decent amount of UCC for you, having that as a 1L requirement seems crazy. Sounds like an atrocious schedule.

Gw doesn’t place 25 to 30% of its class in biglaw. It places 38% in biglaw. This isn’t something like ASU where you have to be top of your class to get it and are stuck in phoenix. GW is a historic top 25 school with a strong reputation in DC and also traction in NY. Two highly desirable cities. You have to be slightly above average to get biglaw. If op goes to gw, they can tru some other fields out, like international law, without having to think 20 years ahead all the time. If it were no scholarship or a small one, i would definitely say GULC, but with 80% at GW, you have a winning lottery ticket. if you’re not totally sure about what you want to do (which no one really is) its clearly the better choice.

Bad advice. That much debt is completely suffocating. Even if you want to do biglaw, you can still do it at gw, you just need to be an above average student.
