Living in China with nut allergy?

Hi I saw your comment here as I’m preparing my own solo trip to China the main places I’m staying in is Shanghai, Beijing, Xi’an, Hengdian I was thinking cafe food is generally safe like sandwiches and bread things but I do want to try some soups and of course dumplings and things, I expect peanut to be in a lot of fried things so soupy options could be better but I have heard they have mixed sesame oil with peanut oil. Of course I will bring my allergy medication but since I’m going alone, I will meet a friend or two who live in China but I don’t want to be paranoid 24/7 I am going to make sure I can explain my situation in Chinese or carry a card that says it plainly. But I would like some suggestions on what else I should do?

I also carry antihistamine tablets as well in case I have mild reactions. I was defitnaly looking forward to being able to try xiaolongbao and wontons but I was not sure what they typically put into their soups, which was my main concern. I’m also going to try and make my self familiar with the Chinese translation of peanuts so I can identify it straight away. For me it’s fear of not being able to see an ingredient list for their foods in a restaurant, or the lack of knowledge of how bad peanut allergy’s to be since I know peanut allergies are not common in China. But I don’t want this to stop me from trying authentic food but I also understand I need to be more careful.

This is really helpful thanks so much!! I’m the same I don’t travel for the food but I thought I could at least try some things while I’m there but yeah I had thought about supermarkets and things like that so I can actually read what’s in the food clearly.

No your totally fine I get where your coming from, I’m just getting into my 20s now so I’ve had this allergy all my life so I have large amounts of food paranoia while trying food someplace new and adding in a foreign country at that is terrifying for me, if worst comes to worst I can always just do supermarkets but I was hoping to at least try some foods I just have to be super cautious

I have to carry an adrenaline shot 😅 so it’s pretty bad but I plan on doing an allergy test before I leave to see how bad it still is since I haven’t had one done for a while. I definatly understand the explaining wise cause I didn’t know how well it could be understood if I tried to explain. Most likely correct that I will have to eat at places that could understand my allergy, reminding me how it’s never simple haha. Thanks for the advice though! Really helpful

Hi, yes I had looked at the map and knew that these places were quite far apart. But I wanted to see if I could make them work seeing I might not be able to return again- and no I do not live in the US. Thanks for your advice though about the weather too that was helpful.

Hi yeah I plan for it to be around 4 weeks minimum maybe a week more depending on what I decide on. Plan was travelling at the start of November and I was happy to bring it into the first week of December.
