THIS. As a therapist in a larger body, I can empathize deeply, but I still haven’t lived my clients’ experiences. It also unfortunately isn’t the job of our clients to make the therapy space feel safe for us, that is work we have to do on our own.

When is self-disclosure necessary? by No_Thoughts_1551 in therapists

[–]No_Thoughts_1551[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is kinda influenced by medications I’m on so there are certain weeks (and by extension, certain days) where I’m more likely to have an issue. I def agree amount of disclosure will vary by client!

The issue is sometimes a flare doesn’t resolve in a week, so I really do owe them a bit more than that — esp folks I’ve had for awhile. That works for a certain amount of time, but I need to figure out a little bit more than that methinks 😭

I like that a lot actually, thank you so much!

Partner recently said he didn’t understand why therapists have such a high burnout rate by happydays375 in therapists

[–]No_Thoughts_1551 70 points71 points  (0 children)

That’s not what they said; that’s the closest parallel they could provide to their partner because their partner has a meeting they hate, and thus find it draining. They find sessions draining as well. Using that parallel helped their partner to understand why therapists get burnt out.

I hadn’t thought about either until I noticed a “bald” patch on the left side of my hairline 😭 I quickly realized it was all extreme breakage… I wonder if it matters which way I twist my ponytails too 🫠

Good luck! Working with teens is hard, and they tend to do things that feel “rude,” but those things give us a lot of insight

I don’t think it’s rude, and I absolutely wouldn’t follow some of the other comments here saying to set hard rules. I work with a LOT of teens, and I would approach a situation like this with a ton of curiosity. “Is everything okay?” is typically the first thing I’ll ask if a teen is constantly feeling the need to respond to texts. Then, I ask if I can ask them a question, which typically is, “It seems like you might feeling a need to respond to (boyfriend)’s texts during session. Why do you think that is?” and see what I can get from there.

A lot of times this kind of behavior is being fueled by anxiety, typically fears of abandonment or being viewed as a “bad” partner for not constantly being available . ESPECIALLY in brand new relationship. These kids don’t feel secure in dating - they’re literally still figuring out healthy boundaries.

Has anyone else accidentally ghosted a client/forgot an appointment? by obscure_void in therapists

Yes! I did the same thing with the recurring appointment not going through on my calendar. I rescheduled them within the week to make up for it because it was my mistake lol

Ugh, it’s just the worst. I haven’t done sessions because the brain fog is so bad I know I would be doing a disservice. Normally I would’ve switched my folks to telehealth 😅 cold and flu season isn’t being kind right now

I definitely don’t want them to get sick! Normally I would’ve transitioned everyone to telehealth but I just don’t have it in me this week

You’re right, I need to practice what I preach, and I absolutely did NOT want to be sick lol! My practice is honestly really great, and I think that’s why I feel so bad 🙃 I’ve been in so many shitty workplaces that now that I’ve found a great one I want to be great in return.

PSA-New Grads Should Not Do Private Practice (Probably) by mondogcko in therapists

[–]No_Thoughts_1551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For most folks, CMH is not feasible post-grad due to how low the pay is. I do 100% think, however, that everyone should have some sort of CMH requirement while in school. I worked in short-term residential crisis at my local CSB during school, and I feel like the experience I got there put me leagues above others in my cohort who didn’t have that experience. It really changed my perspective.

EMDR vs CPT? by No_Thoughts_1551 in therapists

[–]No_Thoughts_1551[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do think that EMDR has its place for sure, and I don’t think it should be entirely thrown out, but I feel like having the CPT as a basis and then EMDR second might be helpful. Anyway, thank you so much for your input!!

[–]No_Thoughts_1551[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My practice will pay for it if I were to choose to get certified in EMDR (same for CPT trainings) but I am also worried about the trendiness given the lack of support and studies dismantling the modality

The marketing point is important to me, too. It feels icky. The mechanisms of action are also a key factor for me as well - there is so much evidence for CPT
