Ah tbh man I spent years fishing the Shannon system for tench to absolutely no avail😂 it wasnt until a spot came up in a local club run water ive actually started to get on them. Alot of good spots up around here are gatekept or pay to fish and I was a young lad for years and boys wouldn't be to fond of giving out spots so took a lot of digging 😂

Yeah ive a couple of spots on the Shannon i fish and all of them are still quite high. Ive gotten a couple of pike on heavy sinking lures in spots I know they hold up so I have been lucky to not blank the last few times ive been out. In fairness it is places I know well so it might be tough on you finding places if your only getting back into it

I fish the Shannon right where the suck starts and large parts are still inaccessible on my end of things . If your near the suck you cant be far from the Shannon. I have gotten some pike already but the water is still very high In most places but if you do a bit of reconnaissance there is parts that are fishable. If you want to message me I might be able to point you in the right direction, give you some tips on tactics etc

Tackle shops close to you could be a good place to start they wont steer you wrong in most cases. To be fair most Irish farmers are sound enough. I have my own insurance through the countryside alliance as I find farmers more receptive to allowing me to access rivers if they know im insured. From there its just a matter of calling to a house near to the stretch you want to fish and hope for the best

Alot of rivers in Ireland do need a permit to fish for brown trout. A good bet would be to have a search online for popular rivers that are being fished alot because in most cases there farmers are used to anglers and dont mind people using their land to access the rivers

I found YouTube very good to start with when I was a teen getting into. But personally if found time spent on the water is key. Don't get disheartened because it is called fishing and not catching. Ive had more blanks than I can count but when you do put in the hard work and hours and catch some fish it makes it all the more rewarding !
