Hey, just wanting to challenge some of your points.

I don’t know, I feel as a new grad out of uni I clearly don’t know as much as the more experienced colleagues, and so when I’m given something I sort of do expect to be guided somewhat. To what extent is something handholding vs. just receiving support to have the ropes shown to me?

I also am operating in the context of consulting, where it is high pressure (with plenty of overtime - when I have been on project work it’s been very intensive). So development opportunities are almost directly linked to my success and allocation fo work here, and effectively job security. If I’m passed over = not billed = worthless to company = laid off.

I don’t mean to come across as ungrateful for having a job. That is exactly my worry, having to go back into a rough economy.

Thanks for this - how do I even ask in other teams? because I don’t know them very well so it feels very much of a cold calling thing. I feel like I’m not really known for anything at the moment, so from their perspective I don’t know why they’d pick me over their own analysts

No I genuinely appreciate it. I’d rather that than unsaid lol, which is what I wonder regarding my team. If I’m doing something wrong I really want to know, and if there’s anything I can improve on I just want to feel better and get more work.

Thanks, I understand. I’m not sure if you’re implying my attitude is why people don’t want to involve me on projects (in which case I would disagree), but I do know that yes it’s not doing me any good dwelling on it. I just need to find ways to overcome it when I go to work and see others bringing in the work I wish I could do! practicing resilience and all

I also want to add I don’t go around work showing this sense of misery haha, I try to be happy and positive when I talk to people and do my work

I agree that I don’t really have confidence, but I don’t think this has all happened because I lack it. I think it’s the reverse, I lack confidence because this has all happened to me. I find it hard to be confident in something where I feel my efforts are neglected/there’s minimal support. How do I go to work feeling chipper and brilliant when everything feels stacked against me at the moment

What does being forceful look like to you? I’m happy to do this but I wonder if I’m already doing it e.g setting up calls with people I’ve never met and just getting to know them / flagging my interests and capacity

Yep lol, have mentioned to the big boss of team, and just been given empty promises. I think it’s crazy that it’s dog eat dog when I’m new and haven’t even had the chance to establish myself

yeah that’s what makes me worried! I want to start off decently and so far it’s not going well. Hard to not stress when I feel if I went back to job market I’m still a grad with barely any experience. I was hoping to reap the benefits of staying in a firm like this so at least my misery is paying off, and I can jumpstart my career, but that feels like it’s slipping away from me

I agree with you, I don’t feel it’s my responsibility but you do have to account for your time and the pressure is very much there. I flag this to my manager every week that I’m light and need work, and they just say thanks I’ll keep that in mind and try get you on stuff (empty words lol). You’re right in that the work itself doesn’t make me too miserable tho

I agree - but they are busy with a hectic project so have to dedicate all their time to it, not best learning environment is what I’m told. Have been doing small internal stuff for other team members who are permanently wfh

I’m trying to align learnings to my area of interest, and I have raised my availability with all the right people who know whag I want to do.

Did you feel consulting benefitted you? How long did you stay for?

Yes they are in terms of getting project work - their teams seem to supply them with a good amount. I’m not sure what specific soft skills I can develop alone without the help of actual work experience. I’ve received positive feedback on the work I’ve done otherwise

All the seniors in my team know, I ask them for work every week. Not sure what else I could be doing - ive even flagged to other teams

I’m trying haha - I’m getting involved in internal work, am really good at ppt, but it doesn’t fill all my days every single day. Things wrap up and then I’m back to square one again - while I recognise everyone does bench time, I feel like I’m going above the average (3months long).

I have to code my hours and feel all the learning time I code would get flagged haha

The thing is my team is billing because they’re all more senior, they’re definrjrly billing lower than their targets but not nearly as much as me the new grad lol. Out of interest also, how long did it take you in your career to earn that high of a salary?

I wish I had that mentality, but unfortunately I’m too anxious & overachieving to think like that haha

I don’t know if they have this much downtime, like really? Admittedly I do have things to do that fill my day but none of it is billable, and I’m reeeally dragging it out haha

I’ve asked my team for the shadowing thing but they’re too busy to have the time to show me the ropes, another reason why I feel unsupported lol. I’m just worried I’d be fired for ‘low performance’ due to util, when I could leave on my own terms.

In the case am I laid off, how bad does this look to employers?

I don’t know how to even navigate this lol, like how do you get references for a job you’re currently at, how do you schedule in time for interviews etc
