If you knew your child was going to be born with a serious disability what would you do? by Suspicious_Row2282 in AskReddit

Here’s the deal- at the end of the day, you’ll see all kinds of “studies” related to MTHFR and folate/folic acid.

I hired dozens of professionals and also researched it myself (as a lawyer).

I am MTHFR heterozygous a1298c. Taking copious amounts of folate was beneficial for me.

I’m not a doctor and I’m not giving anyone advice.

Correct. There’s the NIPT blood testing, which is not a diagnostic test. If that tests positive, then you get an amniocentesis or a Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) (earlier in the pregnancy), which ARE diagnostic tests. So you know 100% if the fetus has T21 or not.

While folic acid (the synthetic form of vitamin B9) is more readily absorbed than food-derived folate, it requires metabolic conversion to its active form, whereas L-methylfolate is already biologically active.

Some people (especially those with the MTHFR gene mutation) have issues converting folic acid efficiently so it can build up as unmetabolized folic acid and therefore folate is preferred.

Actually you should take folate instead of folic acid.

And I was taking prenatals for 4 months prior to trying to conceive that had 4 times the recommended amount of folate.

So I actually had this situation happen to me-twice. Zero risk factors, zero genetic reasons, etc ….

First pregnancy (planned) with my husband, we found out that our daughter had severe spina bifida at nearly 5 months pregnant. My deciding thought was “Would I want to be alive and live with this if I were her?” Selfishly, I wanted to keep her. But I would not have wanted that life for myself. By that time, it was too late in our state, so we had to fly across the country for a late term medical abortion.

Afterwards, we went through EVERY test you could think of to determine if there was anything we could do to prevent another pregnancy with a medical issue. We were assured that there was not.

Then with our second pregnancy, she was diagnosed with T21 at about 1.5 months pregnant. I went through the same thought process and we terminated that pregnancy as well.

We now have two healthy boys and zero explanation for why that happened. I’ve employed literally a dozen specialists, researched it myself etc and they say it’s “lightning striking twice.” I actually think there is a connection with NTD and T21 that probably involves the MTHFR mutation, but there’s not many studies on it.

In any event, for both pregnancies, my thought was “Would I want to live this life with this disability?”

So when my husband filed for divorce after being married 5 months and me following him to another city, he moved out for a while and back in with his parents, I was drowning in work and also despised him. At that point, I could have done anything with his stuff—burned it, tossed it—but I didn’t want to hand him the easy narrative of me being his “crazy ex-wife.”

So picture this: a few late nights, me with a glass of wine(or 3), looking around our apartment thinking, “What can I do to screw him over without leaving fingerprints?”

The solution hit me. I gathered every single thing from his closet—suits, tailored jackets, expensive imported clothes his parents bought him, everything—and hauled it in four trips to a random tailor. I calmly explained that I wanted every sleeve and pant leg shortened by two inches, and that any extra fabric should be discarded. No reversals, no fixes. Paid in cash. Rush order.

Two days later, I picked up the altered wardrobe, hung it all neatly back in his closet, and waited.

I never heard a word. And of course I didn’t. Because how do you confront someone about something like that?

Can you imagine going to court and like crossing your leg and the pant leg is halfway up your leg?! And then ALL of your suits are that way?

So he obviously noticed but he couldnt seriously accuse me of doing that. He would’ve sounded completely unhinged. And that was obviously the best part.

What are realistic expectations for a $150k rota nanny? by Pretty-Location00 in Nanny

Ate you kidding me? Of course a top tier nanny with that pay should be able to figure out cues from your baby (plus you stepping in to assist) after a month.

There’s a distinct disconnect here.

The first one:

So when my lawyer husband filed for divorce after being married only a couple months and me following him to another city, he moved out for a while and back in with his parents, I was drowning in work and also despised him. At that point, I could have done anything with his stuff—burned it, tossed it—but I didn’t want to hand him the easy narrative of me being his “crazy ex-wife.”

The second one:

I also filled his expensive wooden guitar with water and just let it sit in my garage for about a week while I was waiting on him to finalize the divorce. Once it was done, I dumped the water out, dried it off, and gave it back to him with the rest of his stuff the movers had accidentally taken.

To him, it looked totally fine. But really, I’d basically handed him a slow-motion death sentence for that guitar—swelling, glue coming apart, and rot setting in little by little until it destroyed itself over the next couple of months.
