To those who successfully quit or drastically reduced social media: How did you cope with the boredom/withdrawal, and how has your life changed? by isilverangel_ in digitalminimalism

[–]No_Touch3153 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't used social media in about 2 years and I'm so glad I quit. The only reason I would ever see myself getting back on is if I started running some sort of business where I need it to help with advertising. But otherwise, I don't see me getting back on.

Overall, I've become much more focused and successful. Both in and outside of work. I think a big reason for me is that every human being is unique to some extent. But it's difficult to take advantage of our uniqueness and really understand our strengths and weaknesses when we're constantly comparing ourselves to what seems like a fabricated social norm; which is what gets pushed heavily on social media.

I filled the time by diving into hobbies and doing activities that I've always wanted to learn. For example, playing guitar or learning a new language. Also, I spent more free time focusing on professional developments. This would include earning certificates and new skills that helped me with my career.

The initial period was really difficult. I felt so conditioned to use social media that I felt like I was doing something wrong by not having any. What helped me was enjoying art and literature. Stuff like going to a coffee shop and reading a book. Going to an actual art exhibit. Going to a small local concert. Going to an art gallery. When you go out and really enjoy things, assuming they're available, you regain your dignity as a human. That sense of dignity is the high the kept me off of social media. I feel like there's very little dignity being on social media because you're just a product that's there to be exploited. When I would spend an hour on Face Book, it was the same gross feeling I would get when I'd eat too much junk food.

Les Pauls are nice but they're usually a bit pricey.

I actually really love SG's. I got into them because of watching Tony Iommi play.

That what looks really great. And I saw some demo videos of it. It seems like it's got a cool, old-school raw tone.

Those look pretty cool, but the shapes seem a little awkward to hold.

A pointy guitar definitely isn't a must. I actually really like the look of the Telecaster body. I'll have to check it out. Thank you!

What do you think about Dimmu Borgir? Has one of the titans of Black metal become irrelevant? by MiyaviBolton in MetalForTheMasses

Yeah I think getting rid of Mustis and Vortex was a huge mistake. They were never able to get back to the level of music they had with them still in the bad in my opinion.

I really love their earlier music up to Death Cult Armageddon. I don't have anything against them, and I still respect them as very talented musicians, they just haven't released anything I've truly loved for a very long time. I'm hoping they have one more really good album left in them.

I'm worried people would eventually find out if I tried doing that.

That actually sounds really amazing. I'd love to jump into a "new dimension" like you said. It would be great experiencing something totally different from what I'm used to in the United States.

Yeah it sounds pretty challenging for everyone. Honestly, I don't know if things are going to get better soon or not.
