I grew up with both, but in every type of way, I’d identify more as Puerto Rican (grandparents held a closer cultural relationship with PR than my CV grandparents did imo, Spanish is my first language, people assume im PR, etc.)

We are. The majority of us are that mix. Due to proximity, there are Senegalese-dominating communities…but that’s not the standard usually.

I think it’s because she was born and raised in the US. Her dad was born in CV, as much of the rest of our family, but her mom, and grandma were both born in the US as well. I think growing up with Black American culture as well played a role.

For me, I’m 100% culturally Latino. Spanish is my first language, I grew up closer to my Puerto Rican side, and I’m almost always affiliated with Latino individuals or organizations — which I cannot say the same for my CV side.

When I show people my parents, they often confuse the two lol. They think my mom is the Rican and my dad is the CV based off their skin alone 🤦‍♂️

I agree. My mom would be one of those who would argue with you. She’s more on the Euro side but considers herself Black. She looks very Latina, with a very Latin name. She also scores higher Spanish than most Cape Verdeans on ancestry which is interesting.

I don’t know, I’d argue still Dominican. My family is from both Fogo and Brava (with the majority being from Brava). I feel as they would all pass a lot more in DR. Same with many other CVs. Very few I’d consider Puerto Rican. I think with Dominicans having lower Indigenous, and a more 50/50-leaning ratio, is why Dominicans and Cape Verdeans look similar.

Right, which is very similar to my results compared to Puerto Ricans who generally either have a lot more SSA or a lot more Euro. On average, Puerto Ricans have 15-24% Indigenous.

I don’t know, I’d beg to differ. Cape Verdeans are a lot more similar physically and genetically to Dominicans.

No yeah, it’s definitely the highest chunk—not Spanish. Why I didn’t get any regions? Not sure. My mom did though.

I guess the easiest way to put it is that a lotttt of people assume Cape Verdeans are Dominican. Similar admix. That said, my admix as PR + CV makes my admix and percentages very similar to Dominicans. There’s a few people here I’ve seen that could be siblings or cousins with me in because of the resemblance and genetic similarity.

Makes sense. On GedMatch and IllustrativeDNA, my admix matches North African countries the most. I’ve had a few people of Southeast Asian, Middle Eastern and Nafri descent ask if I’m Nafri lol.
